Debugging setup failures

Yeah that is understandable, plex is running on a VM so i'm really not that worried about corrupting it, if I couldn't get this fixed I would have restored the VM from a backup but I would rather try to work out a solution especially if it helps build a better product. I did download it again with chrome a few times, both times the file size was correct BUT I did an MD5 hash of the files and they were different every time. I am not able to reproduce the corrupt file downloading issue with other sites (or my own sites) so I am expecting that this isn't an issue with chrome.

Re-downloading with IE did produce better (and consistent) results. I was able to run the installer but now when I try to add libraries I get fun new errors:

Chrome Error:

  1. POST http://127.0.0.1:32400/library/sections?type=show&agent=&scanner=&language=&location=B%3A%5CDan%5CTV+SHOWS&name=TV+Shows 400 (Bad Request) plex.js?hash=c234d09&version=1.2.25:482
    1. Backbone.Model.extend.saveplex.js?hash=c234d09&version=1.2.25:778
**Edit**:
Looking at the response packet from the  API I get the following messages:

'scanner' is missing or invalid
'agent' is missing or invalid
'language' is missing or invalid

Doing the same in IE crashed the console after an error saying
"XML5619: Incorrect document syntax. Line 1, Column 1"

Chrome has been treating incomplete download files as complete whereas IE11 has not been seen to treat incomplete download as complete without giving an error indication

The Plex Download servers have had lots of issues this year but the last set of problems were resolved. In all these cases Google Chrome could not cope as well as IE11.

I am not going to look at any more diagnostics until I have proof that your download file is complete.

If it is complete then you need to do clean install again as previous installs with incomplete exe would be suspect

If you get missing agents then you go throuh the repair system and framework bundles process. What was done before is all suspect as you were using corrupt install files

The evidence i need to see is a screenshot of the file properties of the PMS 0.9.9.10 download showing both size and digital signatures tab and the MD5 hash and I will compare it with what I have.

With that done, then we can go forward

The comment about chrome accepting incomplete downloads as complete interests me, we have multiple applications that utilize the chrome download utility so I appreciate your explanation of the issues you found. Even though we have not seen it ourselves I believe that the issue exists as you explain it.

I have once again started the install from scratch (add/remove programs uninstall, clear registry, clear localapp files, restart server) and installed the properly signed executable I downloaded from IE. Below I have a screenshot of the executable's digital signature tab as well as the details panel.

Here is a screenshot that includes the size:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_ENPg-qySPcdmowN3FGV1poamc/edit?usp=sharing

Here is the MD5 hash of the installation file:

MD5: 020AB6CCDB30F93FCB40518C438CE4F8

After this install I still have the same issue, I shutdown plex and removed the system and framework bundles as specified and let plex recreate them on startup. The issue still persists.

which version? I am getting a different md5 checksum for PMS 0.9.9.10

Your screenshot of the digital signature does not show which file it was for

Edit: my eyesight . i can see it is 9.9.7, Will check now

OK that is fine. So we have a valid PMS 0.9.9.7 file

so can i see the log to see if you are still getting the 740 error

If you are then i have no idea why - 740 means elevation needed - but why? I run without admin rights, Only used admin rights for install

I apologize, I grabbed the non-plex pass version by accident, 0.9.907. I will get you the same info for 0.9.910 now and do a fresh install.

Okay here is the same information for version 0.9.910

Thanks for getting the new evidence - so now we have a good install file but the results are the same.

All createprocess calls for plugins fail with error 740 which means elevation required. I have no idea why that is. Previously we had corrupt download so anything can happen but now there is no corrupt download.

Do you have the default UAC Settings ?
I suggest you go through the results of this google search
createprocess error elevation required

Other than that would need the Plex Team to advise

But maybe you will find some clues in these hits

I may have found something, I took a look at the "PlexScriptHost.exe" and for some reason it was being created with "Run this program as administrator" checked in the compatibility tab. I unchecked this then restarted plex and was able to make it past the error screen. I will do my normal config now and let you know if this helped.

Yup that was the issue, i'm not sure why this one application would be elevated by default, none of the other applications in the directory had this setting. Sorry for making you spend the day running through this, but hopefully this will help if it comes up again.

Glad it is over - at least now if we get error 740 again we know what it is all about !

Why was compatibility setting made?

That I can't tell you, these applications were created with the plex setup and I never touched them, and they were recreated every time I did the fresh install. I will look around my server to see if i can find some setting that would cause it to auto-elevate certain applications, I did check my UAC settings and they are all set to default.

Thank you for all of your help!

  11. Log on to the computer.
  12. Download and install the latest version of the Windows Installer. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8483
  13. Restart computer
  14. Install Plex Media Server http://www.plexapp.com/download/plex-media-center.php Install was succesful but I got errors on launch.
  15. So then I had to Install it from here http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/
  16. Finally back to working again.....

Thanks, that's great.  Fixed the set-up for me .... but still haven't succeeded in i) watching BBC i-Player via Plex (it's OK direct from my desktop shortcut ii) casting stuff from the PC or my Netgear Stora to Chromecast - i-Player works fine from my i-Phone to the TV however - no need to involve Plex in that!

Hello! I just downloaded the Plex installer last night (I'm very excited about the program -- I've heard great things!) but I'm having trouble running it. It seems to get hung up on the 'Initializing' part and doesn't progress. I have to use the task manager to close the installer (cancelling doesn't work). I was wondering if you could help me.

I have Windows 8
I am running Windows Firewall and uninstalled my trial version of Norton Security
I used Internet Explorer to download the .exe file
I do have Plex.inc under the digital signatures tab in the properties window of the installer.

Any advice? Thank you!

We have had times when the initialize part took a long time.

Any anti virus running? Maybe interfering with the install?

Did you try with Right Click / 'Run As Administrator' on the Plex Media Server install file?

Suggest going through Control Panel / Programs / and Uninstall Plex Media Server

and if that is successful, then Run As Administrator the install file

If it gets stuck - give it 15 minutes and then see if the log files are being written to

There are 2 log files, one detailed and one summary only

They would both be in

c:\users\xxx\appdata\local emp folder

The files are named

Plex Media Server_yyyymmddhhmmss_0_pms.log

Plex Media Server_yyyymmddhhmmss.log

The first one is very big normally - so you need to upload to dropbox or other similar service

I am going to attempt to follow the rest of the instructions.  I'm VERY disappointed.  Plex was supposed to be the bomb.

Have u checked file properties of download file to see it is showing ‘digital signatures’ tab ?

If one not shown with plex inc certificate means incomplete download
