Hi:
I am running Plex Media Server off a Synology Diskstation and deleted the Diskstation Server from the Plex web interface by mistake, is there any way to get it back?
I uninstalled and reinstalled the Plex server on the Synology but the Plex web interface doesn’t even list it as a new server.
Thanks in advance.
Thank you for replying.
I followed the steps you outlined. I went into File Station and deleted plexmediaserver.pid and Preferences.xml. But when I tried to restart the Plex server it wouldn’t start, I tried several times before deciding to uninstall and reinstall. However, when I try to reinstall the all I receive this message:
Port 32400 configured for this package is either used by another service or reserved for system use. Please disable or modify the conflicting service, or contact the developer to modify the package configuration.
I went into my router settings into port forwarding and deleted anything using port 32400, saved the changes, and tried to reinstall the Plex server app but the error message keeps popping up preventing installation.
Not sure what to do now.
Blerg - this is not working.
I have followed the instructions that trumpy81 has laid out, but now I get a new error on the Plex webpage:
This server is unclaimed and not secure
Claiming this server will associate it with your Plex account.
This helps your devices find each other and helps keep your media safe.
And when I click “Claim Server” it thinks about it then stops and reverts back to “Claim Server”.
Also I’ve getting a notification that a new update is available and that I need to install manually. So I downloaded the media server update from Plex installed it on the Synology and I still see this notification even when I rebooted the diskstation.
Trumpy81 thank you so much for taking the time for helping me with this.
But I still can’t “claim server”. I followed your instructions: went to the “Head” icon in the top right corner and signed out then signed in, went to settings and selected server but it did not ask me to sign in rather I was greeted with the message"This server is unclaimed and not secure…" so I clicked on the “claim server” button and it thinks about it for awhile and reverts back to “claim server” button.
I have server version 1.11.0.4633 installed, which is the latest version I believe, but I’m still getting the warning an update is available and please install manually.
Totally confused.
Trumpy81, I really appreciate your assistance.
I followed Q7 as you suggested and then proceed to Q3.
Afterwards, I proceeded to the Plex website and logged-in and was informed that a new server was found.
Made it to the “server setup” screen and clicked on the “next” button and it spun for awhile before a popup appeared “There was a problem saving settings”.
Is this a router problem?
Trumpy81:
I was able to follow along to a point; I went into Control Panel>Shared folders and and checked the permissions for Plex and Admin. Plex has custom permission while Admin has full permission.
I went to the Q18 section of the FAQ section and open up my Terminal window and typed in “ssh root@Your-NAS-IP-Address” to go to the DiskStation, but I received a “connection refused” message.
Am I typing something incorrectly?
Trumpy81 apologies for the late reply I needed to step away from this for a bit as I found it too frustrating and disheartening.
I have gone into DSM Control Panel > Terminal & SNMP and enabled SSH with default port 22.
I proceed to terminal and enter in ssh root@Your-NAS-IP-Address and it directs me to the Diskstation and asks to type in my password and I enter in my admin password and I receive a permission denied message.
Have I typed in something incorrectly or have a permission not turned on or off?
Trumpy81, thank you for the reply.
I have tried to enter sudo -su root in the terminal window but when I type in my Diskstation password I receive the message “sorry, try again”.
Where did I screw up?
Trumpy81 thanks for the reply.
I have not disabled the admin account. But maybe I’m missing a step.
- Enable SSH service with port 22 as default
- Open a terminal window.
- type sudo -su root to direct it to the Diskstation?
- type in my Diskstation password.
Is this correct?
Trumpy81 thank you so much for your help, I feel I am getting closer to getting this to work. But I have followed your instructions and run into a new error. I have attached a screen cap, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t correct.

Trumpy1 Thanks for the reply.
No I do not have a “Media” folder. I think I renamed it to just “video” when I first set it up.
Is this what it should look like? I still cannot claim the server.

Apologies Trumpy81 for the late reply. I want to thank you for your help and your patience.
I followed the steps you prescribed but I was still receiving error messages trying to connect. I have suspected for some time that it was my new Hitron Cable modem/Router provided by my cable/internet provider, Shaw. I called up customer support and had them bridge my old router to the Hitron cable modem/router.
The Diskstation was able to connect to Plex and I was able to claim the server. So everything appears to be working without a problem so far.
Again thank for your help, I didn’t even know where to begin without your assistance.
