I’m having stutter issue on Plex for Shield with one particular file that has TrueHD with 192kHz sample rate. The secondary track with 48kHz works fine, but it’s not the original language of the film. It’s a dub track and 192kHz one is the only lossless surround track available. So I would ideally like to solve this issue instead of just resorting to different track.
I wasn’t sure if this was a some sort of hardware limitation on Shield or Plex app’s limitation, so I tried the same file with Kodi (not Plex plug in, just navigating to folder and playing it) as I do with any file that gives me unexpected outcome with Plex for Shield. Voila, it’s perfectly fine.
This makes me think this is an Plex app limitation/issue. Is this something that has a workaround (as the hardware can support the file based on Kodi result)? Search lead me to some topics about high-res audio files and FLAC, but have not seen anything about audio tracks for videos. (and seems dead).
Outside of using Kodi for that one file…anything that can be done with this kind of file with Plex?

I’m having the same problem with the True HD Japanese language track on Akira. If I select it the video stops roughly every five seconds, hangs for about three then plays again. It’ll do this for the whole film.
Now if I select the English TrueHD audio track it plays just fine.
Using a 2017 Nvidia Shield tv with PMS on a dedicated PC hardwired.
I’ll edit this later on with version numbers but I’m pretty sure they’re current. And I’ll try to add a log file from it too.

Yup. that’s the movie I’m having this issue with, 4K remaster of Akira.
The first file I tried an 89gb version. It did the stuttering thing and I thought it was the file size etc. I dumped it and tried a 20gb version and same thing. I thought it didn’t like the English subtitles but it didn’t make a difference.
I’ll try it with Emby and see it it’ll play correctly. That way we can rule out either the Shield or Plex. If it doesn’t play correctly with Emby then it might be something the Shield doesn’t like.
Sure. Report back after your testings. But the fact that Kodi plays flawlessly makes me suspect that it’s Plex app issue more than anything. But it’s possible something else could be going on.
In the mean time, I might try remuxing 192kHz audio track to my 1080P copy remux of Akira and see if I see same kind of issue. Just to double confirm it’s the audio.
Sorry for double post. Just checked some other files/tracks that are mastered with sample rate higher than 48kHz. 96kHz gave me same stutter issue. Seems pretty clear that Plex simply cannot play this properly? Would love to hear back from Plex confirming or pointing me in the right direction if I’m missing something here.
Well darn. I just ran into this problem on a 1080p version I ripped with THD English audio. It’s jumping all over the place and the audio isn’t very good either. It’s only having an issue on my Shield Pro 2019. Plex on Mac is fine as well as playing back on VLC.
Has there not been any traction from the Plex folks here?
Yes. Please use the other thread if you have anything new to add. Dolby TrueHD issue - #38 by itsdjbuddha
