I just fired up a movie with Dolby Vision profile 7 and was surprised to see it playing back in Dolby Vision on my Apple TV 4K. Looking at the latest release notes from 12/6 i do see under “Improved compatibility with Dolby Vision video”. In the past i’ve only had success with profile 5 and only when the file could Direct Play. As of today i’m able to play Dolby Vision with Direct Stream of the video and transcoding the audio from TrueHD to FLAC. Very nice!

I’m fairly sure that what you are still getting is Plex just forcing the Apple TV into Dolby Vision mode for profile 7 and not actually Dolby Vision. Its been doing that for about a year now…
Those changes in the release notes are more likely to be regarding Dolby Vision in mkv, but Plex do like to be vague/obtuse at times.
