DoVi MKV compatibility? Some profile 8.1 work. Some dont. Some fallback

TLDR: Is there a setting somewhere that would make DoVi fallback to HDR10+ instead of simple HDR?

All of my DoVi videos fallback to simple HDR (not even HDR10). Yesterday I played an HDR movie(non DoVi) and the TV was able to recognize video as HDR10+ and playback is great. So the player is able to stream HDR10+ video, but apparently only if that is the native video.

Is there a setting I’m missing that would make DoVi fallback to HDR10+ or do I need to redo my library to HDR10+ for better TV compatibility?

If the playback mode is Direct Play,
AND
the video track does not only contain DoVi, but also HDR10+ compatibility data,
then the playback device might be able to use the HDR10+ data.

However, if the video stream does only contain (regular) HDR compatibility data, then you can only use that.
There is no way for Plex to “convert” DoVi data into HDR10+ format. That would require a DoVi license for Plex.

(There are even video streams out there which only contain DoVi data. As long as the playback mode is Direct Play and the device is compatible with DoVi, all is fine. But as soon as the playback mode is switched to Transcoding, you will lose either the picture in total, or only get very wrong color. That is for the same reason as above.)

Video encoding is all quite a bit more complex than I had imagined. Converting DoVi to HDR10+ isn’t possible, so I need files with HDR10+ or both types.

My Roku TV supports DoVi, but the player only likes the profile 5 used by streaming services. So I think even if the video has both DoVi & HDR10+, Plex will try to play the DoVi and then fallback to HDR.

Is there a setting in the player to select the video compatibility? If I could take DoVi off the list, then Plex might play HDR10+. If not, then my only real option seems to be recreating the mkv with only HDR10+.

I setup a Firecube with CoreELEC to get plex to stream DoVi profile 7 & 8, but it would be a lot nicer to just do HDR10+ and not need the 2nd device.

Just getting more confused the more I try to figure it out. I tried another video with DoVi & HDR10+ to see if it would fallback and it played DoVi just fine.

Both are “Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 8.1, dvhe.08.06, BL+RPU, no metadata compression”

The video where DV works has a bit rate of 14Mb/s and a codec ID of “hev1”.

The video where DV switches to simple HDR has a bit rate of ~30Mb/s and codec ID of “V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC”.

Is it a bit rate issue or does it need to be that specific codec ID or something else?

Another video with “Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 8.1, dvhe.08.03, BL+RPU” and Codec ID: “V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC”, 24Mb/s bit rate, seems to successfully fallback to HDR10+.

How do I figure out what details make an MKV compatible or not?

Turns out the DoVi video that worked via Roku Plex app is an MP4 while the other 2 are MKV.
