I have Blu-Ray rips of movies containing both HDR10 and Dolby Vision encoding. My television supports both as well. I generally prefer the DoVi versions of films, Plex seems to always Choose the HDR10 version when both are present. IS there a way to force DoVi in these situations. fyi… this happens no matter what player I choose, Android, IOS, and Roku.
Actually, while testing I grabbed a show that is encoded DoVi only, but it is not playing in Dolby Vision and the colors are off. Dovi is playing fine thru Netflix, AppleTV+, and Disney+. and I know someone will ask so fyi… I do have tone mapping enabled. But regardless my TV is not seeing the stream from Plex as DoVi. so that shouldn’t matter. Also, there is not transcoding this is direct play. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Not sure how Roku handles DoVi. However, if the media is in a MKV container, try it using MP4, as some clients require that container for DoVi video.
For example, when playing Dolby Vision profile 5 media using the Plex LG app, if the file is MKV, it will play, but the colors are incorrect. If MP4, it plays with correct colors and is recognized as DoVi by the TV.
Plex Media Server tone maps only when transcoding.
Also, Plex does not have a license to transcode or tone map Dolby Vision video. If the file is DoVi only (profile 5), transcoding will fail with a “color space not supported” error message. If the file has both DoVi and HDR10, then Plex Media Server will transcode the HDR10 video.
Apologies I have no idea. I have downloaded a DoVi demo video from the newsgroups and through PLEX my television doesn’t detect it as DoVi. I also have used a program to Remux some 4k BlueRay with that have both HDR10 and DoVi but those are not recognized either, they just play in standard HDR 10.
I used ffmpeg to switch containers, but it didn’t preserve the DoVi so, I still need to figure that out. I did notice on an original .mkv PLEX server shows it as 4K DoVi/HDR10 (HEVC Main 10), but the PLEX player shows only 4K HDR
