I installed a large SD card in my Samsung tablet and spent hours downloading content to watch on the plane during a trip. It worked great on the way there but after boarding the plane for the trip home I hit a roadblock. I opened the app after settling into my seat only to be greeted with a login prompt. It seems that an app update took place and that logged me out and now I discovered I could not log back in because I was in the air and had no internet access. I looked for a way around this but eventually gave up and sat through the whole flight without entertainment because I was locked out of my content by an update I didn’t even want. Am I just an idiot or is there really no way to play local content without logging in via the internet? What on earth is the point of downloading content if you need an internet connection to access it? This makes the feature completely useless, what could they have possibly been thinking?
so thats another thing they screwed up, i know with the old app you could still access downloaded videos while logged out
I can’t DOWNLOAD at all anymore. I have Plex Pass and I can push the “download” button. But nothing happens. We have 3 lenovo tablets my family uses to watch stuff while traveling. And Currently Plex is useless for offline viewing.
No you couldn’t, (I just tried on 8.45.) You can’t even use the app to see your libraries without being logged in.
Once you’re signed in you don’t need internet, but if you are signed out, then yes there is no way to sign back in without internet. After you sign in once, you shouldn’t have to do it unless it updates again, you sign out, or delete it in authorized devices.
yes you can still access any files that were already downloaded while signed out, i just tested it and it still works and im running 8.45. if it shows login screen then close and restart app and you can access downloaded content while logged out
You’re right, I’m wrong, I didn’t close and relaunch the app.
This is a really serious issue. Offline playing of downloaded content is a HUGE use case. Even Netflix provides this functionality and it works well in that. I am particularly frustrated because I did not ask for or want it to update, I was unaware that it did update because it happened in the background without my knowledge and I did not find out until I was already on a plane and away from internet access. It is absolutely absurd to have to log in online to play offline content! At the very least they could store the downloaded videos in a standard format and location so I could play them with something else.
I just had the same problem on an iPad with version 2025.19.0 (1132) and I DID kill and relaunch the app multiple times and each I’m greeted with a sign in screen and can’t get past it. I can replicate it now at home buy turning off all internet access. One of the main reasons I paid for plex pass and spend 5 hours on a plane and couldn’t access anything.
relaunching didn’t work for me
Has this been fixed yet? I stopped using Plex on my tablet after this update broke it but I have a trip coming up in a couple months and I have not really found a viable alternative for offline playback.
