Downloading problems

K. Out in the middle of nowhere on vacation NO INTERNET at campsite. so I can watch my Home Improvement series on my iPhone. So me and the wife went into town to a Starbucks and got on their WiFi talk about Crap it works as long as your not trying to DL something. Wife was trying to DL Sweet magnolia series on Netflix it was taking for ever so we left Starbucks and went to the Library MUCH BETTER the Netflix DL fine. Plex never hit a lick never moved nothing so do you have to be on the same network to DL anything off your own media server?? If so well that sucks or am I missing something???

If you don’t have internet at home and you go to another location then your phone, cannot connect to your server at home because your server does not have internet.

I not sure if I am misunderstanding. Were you trying to download before you left home?

Sorry about that I changed the original post to reflected that question. I’m on vacation down in South Padre away from home in D/FW.

You don’t need to be on same network. It sounds like you were on wifi at library so the “use mobile data” option should not matter.

Do you know if the thing you were trying to download needed a transcode first? Like were they compatible and ablel to direct play with no transcoding? Were your download settings at “original quality”? Do you know how large of a file size the episode files you were trying to downloading were?

If you can provide. iOS logs after attempting to download something it might tell us something.

K. What is transcoding?? I left everything original and the file was 900mb I’m sorry if I’m dumb that’s why I ask for help. I appreciate any help. I’m kinda think this would be just DL the file to my iPad no problem BUT it’s turning in to a big problem. I tried DL the file through TOSNAS by terramaster that didn’t go well either it’s like how can I DL a file from my server so I can watch it? Once I figure out how to attach the IOS logs to this thread I get it uploaded.

Transcoding just means it is converting the file. The reason might be that the quality setting is lower than the original file is, or that the Video/Audio codecs are incompatible with the device. The server would take some time to convert the file first before it starts downloading

There should be an Upload button in the text entry box ( an up arrow) allow with other formatting things like Bold, Italic, etc

So basically your saying that it’s not just a copy and paste deal. the file is already in a mobile MP4 format. The reason I talked about the iPhone is because I thought the server was down BUT by watching something on my iPhone tells me it’s working fine. So let me ask this when you DL in Plex does the file stay in Plex to watch or does it just put it on what ever device you DL to as a file that you watch. The reason I ask this is Netflix you DL anything and remains in Netflix to watch it BUT it is a file on you device. I’m try to understand why Plex doesn’t work the same. As for the IOS.log I’ll get that attached as soon as I get back home. For today new adventure have to make run into town to get propane tank filled to get the damn heater back up and running because it still cold down here in south Texas and so we can cook and fill the SUV up and start packing. So once I get back home I’ll play with it more.

if you have downloaded content and you are viewing the library normally. If you select something that you downloading by default in settings " prefer downloaded content" is enabled and should play the downloaded file rather than streaming it.

On an iPhone you can’t view the downloaded content with another app if that is what you mean.

Just got home. Try to DL something to my IPad and it worked like a champ. What’s the difference go through the library in Harlingen, Texas to back in D/FW area? It should have worked. You got me on this problem.

It is possible that they block ports. Many businesses do that. But not knowing anything about their network I could not say.

I would try downloading something when at a friends house and see if it is an issue with you being remote, not necessarily an issue with that specific library

Here’s a thought WHY would they be able to block Plex DL but not the Netflix that was DL to my wife’s IPad right next to my IPad

Well Netflix is a much more popular and commonly used service and they might have specifically allowed whatever ports Netflix uses through their firewall, but block most other things, probably not specifically Plex. but we have come across some ISPs like Comcast and Shaw that do specially block some Plex URLs in their “safe browsing” software so their ISP and not them could be doing it.

I’m not saying the library or their ISP were for sure doing that, it is just a possibility
