Downloads & Sync does not work

I cannot get downloads & sync to work. What do you need from me to get this fixed? I can provide time, logs, whatever. I notice in the first dev release notes in 2013 that downloads and sync was still a little shaky. It’s 2020. 7 years and it still doesn’t work.

Here’s what happens:

I select a playlist to download to my device. After sync has completed downloading - I turn on airplane mode, or even shut down the server, and attempt to play the music from the playlist. If I try to shuffle the playlist, the application crashes and restarts. If I try and just play it in order, I get a little notification at the bottom that says “An error occurred while playing this item.”

This happens to every playlist I’ve tried. Both smart and normal. I have uninstalled and re-installed the app on the phone in between restarts multiple times. It always behaves this way.

Occasionally, this even now prevents any music from even the other playlists that are not in Downloads & Sync - with the same types of problems. Deleting the playlists from Downloads & Sync and restarting the app has been the only way to get the music to play again. Even then, it will only do so if the server is on and I am connected to it over the internet.

What are the next steps? What kind of logs can I provide?

I’ve gathered logs for the most recent reproduction of one of the issues - “An error occurred while playing this item.”

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Clear all download sync data.
  2. Select a normal playlist and set it to download/sync.
  3. Wait for download to complete.
  4. Observe that in the “download & sync > playlists” that the playlist does not show (this sometimes happens, but is not what I observed in my OP)
  5. Try and play the music from the normal playlists section by clicking on “shuffle”
  6. Observe that an error message notification shows up on screen for every song as it tries to play each of them. (Usually the app crashes here when I shuffle) This error notification stays on screen even when exiting the app. If you can time it right and click “pause” or the “X” to stop play, the error message goes away, but sometimes it goes so fast that this is not possible and a complete phone restart is necessary for the message to go away.
  7. Now unable to listen to any of the songs in the playlist until I clear my download data again.
