DS418play - Looking for servers...

Hi there,

New to Plex - recently upgraded my DS213 to a DS418play so that I could switch to Plex.

I’ve used the FAQ to install the Plex Server on my NAS however am stuck with “Looking for servers” when I login to the app on the DS418play, or at plex.tv.

I’ve tried to logout of both and log back in, delete the devices under settings, etc., nothing is working for me.

Can someone help?

Thanks very much.

Hi there, thanks for the input. Followed the above, I could not delete plexmediaserver.pid as the file didn’t exist however all steps were completed. I restarted the Plex app in the Synology - getting the same result, looking for servers. Sorry for being a pain.

I followed Q13 to post a log for if the server is not accessible - logs.zip is attached.

Thanks Trumpy81!
My router (Nighthawk r8500) was setup to use 168.192.X.XXX and was not in alignment with my NAS. Set both to 192.168.X.XXX - working properly now.

No problem.

Happy Plexing!

One last question if I may. I was previously using Infuse to grab data from my Synology DS213 and subsequent upgrade to the DS418play. Infuse worked well however I liked the idea behind Plex.

When I play videos via Infuse, my DS418play is quite quiet - no noticeable drive noise however when I use plex, the NAS makes a lot of noice (HDD noise). I can’t test on the DS213 as it does not support plex.

I’m thinking the issue may be that I do not have a Plex Pass and therefore cannot use hardware transcoding support - your thoughts? I’d like to stick with Plex however cannot deal with this.

Thanks!

As a note: Synology has two cooling modes. I’ve turned it to maximum and I cannot tell the difference. It sits right next to me.

Yes, a Plex Pass would improve things as it would allow you to use HW Acceleration on your NAS (luckily it supports it). Plex would not be spinning up the drives any more than normal so it must be the cooling fan/s in the NAS.

I have heard of some people swapping the fans in other Synology NAS for more efficient fans that do a better job of cooling and are quieter.

If you go that route though, you will void your warranty.

It couldn’t hurt to tape a fan on here and there though … lol

Edit: Unless you are running noisy HGST HDD’s or WD Red. They can make a racket when moving the heads quickly, although they shouldn’t be that loud.

It’s defiantly coming from the HDDs - sounds like a desktop computer starting up. It’s odd that it doesn’t happen with Infuse (beside for the first 2-3 seconds a while the file is being loaded by the NAS). With plex, it continues for the entire video - of note, the NAS jumps right to 99% CPU load.

Is it possible this is just how Plex accesses data? I have 2x2TB drives in the DS418play - Toshiba (which I take it are rebranded HGST hds72302 ).

Great, thanks for the info. I will try the plex pass and see how it goes. My drives appear to be Toahiba manufactured by Hitachi.
