Upgrading to DSM 7
Permission changes to “System Internal User” PlexMediaServer
Here’s the How-TO
I did change the permissions as outlined…
NOTE:
OH… so it didn’t migrate.
Sorry, I misunderstood.
First step (permissions for the Plex shared folder) are the most important.
In the same manner as I showed bove (Faq 30)
EDIT the Plex shared folder permissions
Grant PlexMediaServer Administrative, Read, and Write
Make certain to “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files” (so it can get all your metadata)
This will take some time (depends how many files you have indexed)
While that’s happening,
– Uninstall the DSM 7 app
– Choose the ERASE option.
Get ALL DSM 7 PMS out of there so you can bring your DSM 6 server forward to DSM 7.
Please let me know when you’ve got
Are you asking to uninstall PMS as shown above with the erase option?
Yes.
I ask you to do this because:
I specifically wrote the code to prevent accidental overwrite of a server.
Therefore, If I see valid server data in PlexMediaServer, I ignore the Plex shared folder.
The action will remove ONLY this transitory DSM 7 instance (which is empty)
Okay, all finished. What’s next?
Cool.
** NOW WE WAIT – and WAIT – and maybe WAIT some more **
It will sit at “Installing” until everything is done. It will do the following:
Check the most important permissions are correct.
– It will error out if any need fixing with instructions in the message how to fix it (for you)
It will then start going through all the steps (there are 4 major steps which get done) to update the DSM 6 server to DSM 7 and move all the data from the Plex shared folder to the new PlexMediaServer shared folder
– While this is happening… Don’t close or refresh the installing page. (Important)
Open a new tab to the Syno.
In the Plex shared folder, after about 3-4 minutes, you’ll see a file “Migration.log”
– This is the script telling you where it’s at in the process.
– When you see “Clean /volume1/Plex. Completed” – You’re done.
It looks like this:
This installation needed 16 minutes to complete.
I started the reinstall last night. This morning the “Migration.log” last line states:
=== Sat Jan 7 23:18:05 CST 2023 === Completed: Clean /volume1/Plex
When I go to the “Package Center” and click “open” on the PMS package, I get the following… "Response code=“503” title=“Maintenance” status=“Plex Media Server is currently running startup maintenance tasks.” Is it still upgrading the library?
If I run the Plex app on my Mac I see the following…
This is annoying but good.
503 is actually “Temporarily Unavailable” HTTP code
PMS is doing the database schema change. Let it finish…
The migration finished nicely… GOOD SIGN.
Have you opened it again since?
Well, I have let the system run all day and still gives me the same notices as above… I checked the “Resource Monitor” and it doesn’t look like its doing anything, Is it stuck?
I’ve never seen this happen.
You upgraded to which PMS version please?
Did you previously have a much older version? If so, which one ?
Lastly, restart it.
If still no success, manually make a ZIP of the “Logs” directory in.
PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
I upgraded to PMS version: 1.30.0.6486-7000
I had the latest version of PMS installed that work with DSM 6.2 before I upgraded to DSM 7.1.1-42962
Well, I restarted the server and all is well… Go figure. Thanks for all your help!
Welcome to DSM 7.
