DSM 7 what should I do

Hi everyone, and a big thank you (in advance :-)) to ChuckPA; he is always very very helpful!

This is my situation:
DS918+
Running DSM 6.2.4-25556 and PMS 1.23.5.4801-6000 (plex pass owner)

What do you think? Should I have to upgrade to DSM7? At the moment my NAS is not asking for DSM7, no message prompted.

I was reading this thread (and I’m from Italy, so not a good english speaker :-)) and I’m surprised to read that you have to uninstall the DSM 6 package! Do you mean the PMS version running on my NAS now?

And what do you mean when you write “Install the DSM 7 package”? Do you mean this one? Intel 64-bit

The above mentioned steps… after upgrading my NAS to DSM7, I believe…

Thanks, for now

Ok, thank you. I see that my NAS doesn’t allow, for the moment, a manual update to DSM7 (DSM_DS918+_41890.pat) so… I’ll be waiting, for now.

@supertopix

  1. Uninstalling the DSM 6 PMS package helps prevent it from upgrading instead of a fresh installation of DSM 7 Plex with migration as it should be.

  2. For your NAS (DS918+), yes you want the 64 bit version.

  3. You may upgrade to DSM 7 when you’re ready. There is no rush.

  4. You might be pleased to learn that the installer supports Italian if you have your Synology also configured to display Italian.

  5. When you do decide to upgrade, it is extremely important to follow all the instructions. The most important one which seems overlooked is “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files” checkbox when setting “Custom” permissions for System Internal User “PlexMediaServer”

Have fun! :smiling_imp:

@supertopix

Divertiti! :smiling_imp:

quaggiù!

  1. & 2. are ok.

Now… fingers crossed…

  1. & 4. are ok.

Now I’m installing PMS. Is it possible that the process has been running for more than 15 minutes and never ends?

The process will take much time.

One user needed 15 hours

Hi @ChuckPa and thanks again. I did everything and my PMS on DS918+ is now running!

There’s a strange issue, anyway. On the same Plex account I have another server, on a Linux NUC (you really helped me to set it up, a year ago). Well, after I upgraded DSM7 and PMS on my Synology, PMS on the NUC is not able to play any media, anymore. How this? Why? I did not touch anything, on NUC/Linux side.
Have you any idea?
Thanks

If the NUC uses the media from the Synology, make certain all the file sharing services are again enabled. DSM 7 is a “Fresh Install” of the Synology Linux OS.

Yes, the NUC uses the media from the Synology… I’ve enabled SMB, AFP and NFS, from File Services. But nothing changed.

which service do you mount with ? NFS? Walk through it step by step and debug it.
Unmount/remount on the NUC side.
The most likely change are UID/GID and shared folder permissions

unfortunately I’m really not a Linux expert, you helped me a year ago… I’m not able to do again all the steps on NUC sides… If you can remember, is here Plex Server on a NUC

I recently updated my Synology NAS where Plex is installed to DSM 7, now Plex doesn’t recognize folder changes and adds new files automatically anymore. Does anyone know why that is? When I manually update the library new files get added fine.

Do you still have the schedule task - user script which increased the number of folders Plex can watch?

If so, Re-run it and restart Plex.

DSM 7 is a complete Operating System installation. It erased the old customization.

I don’t know what that is. I just installed the Synology Plex package in DSM 6 and did the same thing in DSM 7, I didn’t do anything extra with scripts.

If Plex isn’t automatically updating, it’s likely you crossed the magic 8192 directories limit (Linux default) which is the default size of the notification table.

please use this procedure (same for DSM 5-7) and see how many directories yo come up with ?

This makes no sense since it worked just fine under DSM 6 with the same number of directories as now.

I am using these settings but Plex does not add new movies automatically since upgrading to DSM 7, once I do a manual scan they show up fine.

EDIT: The periodic scan that runs every hour works fine, new movies and shows get added through it, but the scan that’s supposed to run when Plex detects changes to folders does not happen since I updated to DSM 7.

The problem appears to have fixed itself for no discernible reason.

Hi,

I currently have Plex running on my DS with DSM 6. I’ve planned to move to DSM 7 soon but I don’t want to upgrade, I wanted to do a fresh install. Is it possible to back up Plex (Libraries, Metadata, etc.) and restore those on a fresh PMS install on DSM 7?

Most important for me would be Collections and Metadata.

Is the upgrade keeping any settings I did in DSM? Because I wanted to start completely from scratch (except Plex).
But I’m also fine with upgrading and migrating Plex. then backing up Plex and do DSM 7 from scratch.
