Plex Media Server install on Synology DS916+ NAS running DSM 7

Server Version#: PlexMediaServer-1.23.6.4881-e2e58f321-x86_64_DSM7.spk (for Intel 64-bit processor)

Followed guidance on plex forum posts as best I could to allow PMS the correct permissions to allow it to install, although as you will see later some of the on screen instructions shown in the screenshots of ChuckPA’s guidance no longer appear to exist in the most recent release e.g. there is no “custom” setting on the permissions tab in DMS 7

Uninstalled Old version of Plex which only worked for DMS 6 and restarted the NAS before attempting a manual install of the latest version of PMS. The Plex Media Server was installed on the same volume as the Plex share on my NAS. Choices made during install:

  1. Installation Option: Tried selecting Normal and using Plex Claim token made no difference
  2. Logging Options: Chose use PMS internal Storage

Get Pre-installation check failure notice that halts install

Issues:

  • PlexMediaServer the Custom checkbox mentioned in ChuckPA guidance no longer exists in my version of DMS7 or I am looking in the wrong place (see screenshots)
  • There is no option offer made to click Apply permissions to this folder, sub-folders during my install
  • I am not sure what additional permissions I have to give PMS in order to satisfy its needs to allow the install to proceed

hope somebody can help with these questions and issues because at the moment I have no working version of Plex with which to access my Media files

The failure is expected.

You need to give the PlexMediaServer user access to the /Plex shared folder.

See Scenario 2, Step 4:

Hi FordGuy,

Yes I realise that and I have read the guidance that you link to and I believe I have provided the access permissions required, see my post and the screenshots within, but the installer when doing the pre-install checks still thinks there is some area where permissions are not sufficient. So I want to know which additional permissions might be required or perhaps where there is some fault in my following or understanding of the migration instructions. Please also note some of the DSM screen shots in the migration instructions may be out of date as some of the options shown as part of the migration instructions are not available in my installed version,

@HowardB61

You show READ/WRITE . This is incomplete.

It must be Full Control and Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files

If you cannot do this, Please let me know. There are known rare cases where the “Custom” button doesn’t exist but we know how to resolve it.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the reply, as I said in my original post my screens don’t look like yours, below is how I am accessing the Plex shared folder

I do have a plexmediaserver object listed under permissions tab but I only have read\write options available when editing permissions there is no “Full Control” option and no tick box at the bottom of the screen to apply changes to this folder, subfolder and files only a “Save” button

Hi Trumpy,

That convert to Windows ACL was not greyed out for the plex shared folder I have kicked off the conversion now. Does it take a long time if you have loads of media files?

OK will do will report back what happens, thx for pointer

OK convert to windows ACL action completed and I restarted the NAS

When I access the Plex shared folder permissions I now see the “Customise” option allows me to set permissions for the PMS so as you can see I set permissions for everything admin rights, read and write permissions

Clicked Done and I can see that PMS has “FullControl” ticked the box to apply rights to this folder and any subfolders and files

Clicked "Save and the permissions tab now looks as shown below

Clicked “Save”

Attempted the manual install again and this time it succeeded .. Yay!

Looks like I have access to all my media playable from my PC and from my TV using Plex

So only remains for me to thank you for providing the solution

Now that it’s working I’m interested to know how it performs relative to before (when running DSM 6.2). Is streaming any faster/slower, etc?
