As the title says I see duplicate movie poster in my movies folder even though I have collections disabled.
Some movies show the little icon of a 2 next to it show 2 copies.
Other movies have duplicate poster art for the same movie.
I have about 6 directories for movies and some have movies cross over and exist in multiple directories but I was under the assumption plex just merged them into the one movie title.

What you are seeing there are not collections, but genuine duplicate files.
Whether Plex will summarize duplicates under one common poster or not, depends on your agent configuration.
If you once had a different default metadata agent for your library, but changed it later, you can end up with 2 posters side by side of the same movie.
One of the copies will be matched to the old agent and the other to the new agent. For Plex, these are different movies.

I did change the agent to pull in some metadata.
With your first option how do I ‘Merge’ all those posters that are actually the same movie?
One by one. ‘Select’ the two posters, the Merge command is available in the regular ‘Library’ view, under the ellipsis in the upper, right corner.
