Duplicate Rogue Stream

Server Version: 1.18.0.1944
Player Version: PMP 2.44
Client OS: Windows 10 1903 - Fujitsu Desktop PC
Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard - HP ProLiant ML350 G6 - Dual Xeon X5675
Sony 7.1 AV Receiver

Has anyone else seen this happen over the last few PMS versions?

Start a stream, and PMS spawns 2 Streams, one of which is Rogue, showing no bandwidth or play information, the other is genuine.

The Rogue stream cannot be stopped. The “Stop Playback” option does not appear either in the Dashboard or in Tautulli.

The Rogue stream will eventually die after a few minutes.

Seems to be happening regardless of Player location (LAN or WAN), regardless of content type, and with multiple clients (Web, PMP, XBOX)

Doesn’t happen every time, but does happen more often than not.

Screen dumps below…

Cheers,

Andy.

Nobody seeing this behavior at all?

Anyway, gathered some logs, but nothing stands out to me.

For reference…

23.08 - Started stream Van Helsing - Almost immediately there were 2 streams.
23.09 - Stopped stream Van Helsing - Genuine stream stops, Rogue stream continues.
23.12 - Rogue stream dies.

Looks like some personal info in them… doing it again…

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-10-20_23-31-43.zip (77.4 KB)

Would certainly appreciate someone taking a look :grinning:

im having the same issue, it just started when i updated to the latest version. This is also causing my cpu to spike to 50% for a few seconds about every 45 seconds to 1 minute constantly while any video is playing…

Ive changed nothing besides updating plex and updating windows, i rarely if ever go on the host computer so i dont know how long this has been going on… I dont even know if this was happening before i updated, its a fresh install on a new pc, no more than a month running. I still get the cpu spikes even when plex on my playback device (xbox) is closed, i have to exit and shutdown plex and restart it to get the cpu spikes to stop .Untitled

Phew! For a moment there, I thought I was the only one alive with this problem!! Although I’m not seeing any CPU Spikes.

@kingkong0111 - Are you sure it’s Plex that is spiking? Have you looked at the Details tab to get more information on the processes running?

yes its plex media server 32 bit (plex media server.exe) in the task manager thats hitting the cpu. If i start playing something i get the double playback in the dashboard and while watching cpu usage i can see the plex apps cpu usage spike up then drop just like in the pic, And it keeps doing it every 45 seconds until the rogue playback stops or i kill plex and restart it… Its the only way ive found to stop the cpu spikes, but once i start playing something it does it again(both double play and cpu spikes}

Ok, cool.

I’ve checked again, and I’m definitely not getting the CPU spikes, but the duplicate stream is rather annoying.

But also good to know I’m not the only one seeing this :grinning:

Now all we gotta do is get someone’s attention…

Any Plex bods wanna weigh in on this?

Bump!

So I tried playing something from my PS4, which I haven’t used in a while, and even though the genuine stream is correctly showing that it is transcoding, the Duplicate stream is showing as Direct Playing.

Also showing some rather curious bandwidth usage! I know I don’t have 10GbE networking!

Same here
Server Version: 1.18.1.1973

Thanks @Snail02 - And it looks like you’re running the later PMS version to me.

Plex bods???

im still having cpu spikes every 45 seconds to 1 minute during direct playback today, but no duplicate playback. i have no idea whats going on and whats causing this
.today1 3

so how about this. i closed the xbox app, exited the plex app on the pc, restarted the app on the pc and xbox, and restarted playback… no cpu spikes but duplicate playback… seriously, this is only 20 minutes apart

restart2

@kingkong0111 - Indeed I have also noticed that the problem is not entirely consistent, however the one thing I can say for sure, is I’m not seeing any CPU Spikes.

In the 3 days since I created this thread, there have been 132 views to date, and I cannot believe that NONE of them have been a Plex bod!

Come on guys, is someone gonna pick up the reins on this???

It seems another user who started a topic is also experiencing the duplicate streams problem…

So last night i tried to add a few new songs to my music library and… its kept scanning and scanning and scanning and wouldnt stop. And ive see a few other topics about this problem to.

So i uninstalled 1.18 and reinstalled 1.16.5, And … The duplicate playback is still there(ugh wtf)… And the CPU spikes are STILL HAPPENING!!.. I even restarted the host pc after the reinstall. So 1.16.5 has these issue to… This is ridiculous…This was not happening before(that i noticed), I dont know why its having cpu spikes while streaming to the xbox.

Is plex scanning for something every 45 seconds or what, this is still going on, even 2 versions previous…

Even with NO PLAYBACK at all, the cpu spikes are still happening, right on cue… Theres some kind of serious BUG here…

I guess ill be keeping my vnc connected all day and watching the task manager for when i see the spikes the best way to stop them i to shut down plex and restart it, glad it takes 5 seconds to start…

I will edit my post if anything changes…still1still3

This doesn’t make any sense at all… I might even go so far as to saying my usual favorite phrase… “That’s not possible!”, and yet you are seeing it happen! I’d love 2 know what is causing this.

Thanks for the update @kingkong0111, and hopefully we’ll get some resolution soon :grinning:

Why are all the Plex bods ignoring this issue? I’m getting to the point where I’m gonna had to PM someone just to get their attention! Grrr…

Bumping this again, and hopefully someone will take notice at the beginning of the working week!

new version came out today and the patch notes said nothing about rogue streams or anything…

Ive just been exiting the restarting plex every night, it seems to fix the cpu spikes until i stream something else

So I also run an instance of PMS on my laptop, which gives me the ability to update that whilst leaving my main PMS alone.

I’ve updated to 1.18.1.1973 and can confirm the duplicate problem is still apparent.

It’s now 8 days since I first reported this. Surely there must be a Plex bod who’ll take this on?

9 Days since first reporting, and still being ignored by all the Plex bods…
