Duplicate/Triplicate Authorized Devices for Server

Server Version#:1.21.1.3876-3c3adfcb4
Player Version#: NA

When trying to clean up my Authorized Devices I noticed duplicate devices for my Plex Server. Everything about them was duplicate: windows build, plex version(1.14.1.5488-cc260c476), name, everything. I then updated the server to the latest Plex version which then showed the updated build for Windows and the new version of Plex. So now I show three authorized devices for my server, one being the most recent, and two being older identical records.

The entire reason I was doing this was I was sharing content with some other people and it showed they had more libraries shared then what was actually shared. I found some people on the forum saying to delete any old servers that had been authorized so this is where I ended up.

I have a couple of different questions here. What would have been the downfall to deleting one of the two that were identical prior to me doing the upgrade? Did I need to find the one that was sharing information that wasn’t valid anymore and how would I have done that? Now that I have three, and two of those seem to be old, is it safe to delete those other two? How will any of this effect my shares to people or anything else?

Every time you install the Plex server onto a different hardware,
or delete the Plex server registry branch
Plex will request that you “claim” your server. By claiming it (or simply signing it in to your plex account), you will generate a new authentication token.
That is what shows up as “server device” in your account.

So whenever you re-install your server, you better back up the registry branch.

Everyone one of these was on the same machine not from a new machine with the same name or even a reinstall… same machine… same installation. I built this machine for Plex and have never done anything except upgraded the Plex software and updated Windows when it needed updates.
They weren’t reimaged or anything. But I still ended up with three authenticated devices from the same machine. The latest one makes sense since I upgraded the Plex software but the other two identical ones do not.

And I would still like to know what would have happened if I had deleted one of the two that were identical prior to having the third one.

Nothing would have happened. The older tokens haven’t been used for over 2 years. So I think it is safe to delete them.

Another thing what can cause several tokens on the same hardware is using several different Windows user accounts. Plex server is running in the user context and is using the registry branch of the logged-in Windows user.
If you started it up under different user accounts and performed the plex account sign-in under both accounts, you end up with several different login tokens.
