DVR recording: There was a transcoder error

Many of my scheduled live TV recordings are not making it all the way through - they appear with the message “There was a transcoder error”.

Initially I looked up a cause based on a dodgy W10 update in June/July, but when I went to install the KBs mentioned in the fix, W10 tells me they’re not valid for the installation any more.

I notice the issue has been occurring since early November - that’s how far back my recording history in Plex goes.

I’ve attached the logs. There were two times that it happened, both times in the log file it says:
“av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error”. I know this is also a generic issue and the logs need to be reviewed to determine the issue.

For those interested in this one, the problem was a dodgy hard drive.

Does not seem to be the same problem as mine (because it started with 1.14 and stopped after downgrade to 1.13.9), although the symptoms are the same.

What was your solution exactly. Maybe this could help me.

I sincerely hope that I can help, because this error is really frustrating. Sadly, I doubt I can give you any particularly helpful information.

The error in the log, from what I can see, is a generic error - a catch-all - for when there are issues recording. It gives no really specific information about what causes it - although having said that, I never turned debug log on so perhaps that gives more insight.

I suspected the hard drive because about a month ago, the hard drive “disappeared” from windows - an apparent fault - and I had to unplug (it’s an SSD in an external enclosure) and plug in again for it to work. So, I suspected that either the enclosure or the SSD itself was the problem. To check, I used a different SSD and enclosure and haven’t had the problem since.

Hope that helps a little, as Plex support is pretty woeful on these boards.
