DVR Tuner not working, cannot re-add it

Hello,

I have the HDHomeRun tuner and it has been working with Plex since the earliest days of the beta. Recently, the Plex server stopped displaying the availability of the tuner. I noticed it a few weeks ago but am only now investigating the issue.

It’s kind of important to me to make this work since I’m located in Houston and want to let my family and friends see the local news channels for important information for those without power but have phones during Hurricane Harvey.

I have tested the tuner using both Silicon Dust’s Windows client and visiting the tuner directly in the browser, and with the Windows 10 app. In all cases, the tuner is working fine and I can watch my local TV stations.

Plex, however, refuses to see it. I suspect something is amiss with my Plex database or something. I removed it from Plex and was going to re-add it, but it is never discovered and if I put in the IP address manually, nothing happens.

In the Plex Media Server.log file, I see this each time I try to manually add it:

So Plex seems to think it is still installed and configured, but this is not the case at all.

How can I force Plex to re-add this device? Is there something in the database I need to flip, is there a .conf file somewhere that is lying about the current state, or is there something else going on here?

It’s unfortunate that this can’t be resolved. I cannot be the only person with this problem. Please, if you can help, I still have friends without power or are displaced from their homes living in hotels. I need to get this working. How can I tell Plex to forcefully re-add this tuner? It is a working tuner. It is fine. Plex won’t add it.

I’m savvy - tell me where in the database I can go to bit-flip this so it will let me re-add the tuner. Or if not in the database, which cache files or other files I need to modify to tune this to work.

Update: This is now working again. The HDHomeRun is now visible in Plex and I was able to re-add it. I suppose whatever needed to bitflip did it on its own after a set period of time. Doesn’t help me now, but at least live TV streaming is working again in Plex.

If this comes up in a random Google search down the line, sorry, I have no other information to offer as to why it just magically started working again.

I saw the your DVR is already working again. However, since I had the same issue and it did not fix itself I found through trial and error how to fix it. You need to get into your database folder example (M:\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Databases) shut down your server and remove all of the .db-shm and .db-wal files. When you restart your server it will create new ones and your DVR will be available again.

Hey thanks! I’ll give that a shot next time. I’d like a more “clean” answer to it, but if it works, whatever! I was fine with toggling something in the database itself, but it appears no one else seems to have this problem and I’m not sure why mine just starting “working” again. Maybe I did the same thing and forgot to just check it since I had to abandon my house. Luckily, my Plex server is on my 2nd floor and it never went down! Much like spilling a good beer, uptime, even during a disaster, is a great thing

So - for anyone that finds this via a Google search and you really wanted to dig into the issue, I did discover that this is a sqlite3 database. Since mine is working I haven’t poked around the different tables, but if you really wanted to get your arms deep in grease, feel free to see what you can discover. I would love it if someone who currently has the same issue is able to post up what the actual fix was. At that point I’d be more than happy to submit a bug report with a known workaround so the devs know where to look.

This link isn’t to a related issue, but it describes basic steps to access the database:

Good information (I hope) I just had this same issues occur last night and gave up. Hoping the HDHomerun would show up again. I will try to see if I can delete those databases tonight, I do have this running on the Nvidia shield TV so the file location may be different. I will try to update this for others as well.

having the same issue however using a nvidia shield where access to the DB is hidden from the user - how do I go about fixing this issue? Also cant remotely restart PMS or even nvidia so have to wait to get back home which is a nuisance.

+1 can’t add my tuner back! And I don’t think I can access that stuff on shield

I’ve been away from this thread.

For nVidia Shield tuner issues, please post in the nVidia forum. I cannot support them as I do not have the device.

==============================

For those who are using linux,

For those using USB tuners,
Please attempt to attach the tuner again / locate it / setup step.

After this step fails, please collect the log files (Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs) and attach the ZIP file.

For those using Network tuners

Please open a thread in DVR & Live TV.

not sure whether the issue is with Plex, the DVR plugin OR with the Nvidia - certainly in my case I think it is NOT with the latter however the fact that you cant bounce the server nor the physical machine remotely contributes to the frustration.

Anyway, the way I managed to get it back working is to physically bounce the box and then it discovered the Tuners again - seems like PMS had hung.

Please explain “bounce the box” ? Which machine did you reset?

This PMS is running on a Nvidia Shield - 16GB
Version of PMS - Version 1.10.1.4602

So in your case, it’s not a Linux problem, it’s a shield problem ?

The only reason why I physically rebooted the box is because I have no way of restarting PMS remotely.

I have the box connected to a smartplug that allows me to bounce it remotely.

I am not sure whether the issue is with the Shield or with PMS or even the plugin…

Either way, it’s not Linux and you are in the Linux forum. I don’t own a shield and barely use DVR so am of no real help. I’d like to get your post(s) somewhere where they will be seen and you can get help

May I make a suggestion?

Agree.

I had this similar problem using Centos. In network settings>>identity>>Firewall Zone, changed that to trusted and it found both my devices immediately.
