DVR with Virgin Media

I’m in the UK with Virgin Media cable and their TV box. I have just bought an Nvidia Shield. My goal is to be able to record TV programmes onto something other than the Virgin box and then use Plex on my Shield to view them.

I’m looking at the Plex Pass. But, in simple terms, what’s the set up? This is what I have currently:

Cable comes into house and into Virgin Box
HDMI cable goes from Virgin Box to TV
HDMI cable goes from Shield to TV

What do I need to add into the mix to be able to achieve what I want?

TIA
Andy

Something like a hdhomerun devive or sat>ip if you have a satellite then something to record the shows to like an external HDD connected to your shield. You will only be able to record freesat/freeview stuff doing this.

I’m also on Virgin but I have yet to find a device that will take the virgin cable line in and convert it to data that Plex can view. I think the best you might be able to do is record the HDMI out of the virgin box but you will obviously only be able to record the channel that you’re tuned to on the box.

The official supported tuners are listed here https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/ and the only cable one seems to be the VBox one but I don’t know if it will work with the virgin signal, and if it does, I’m pretty sure it won’t be able to tune to anything encrypted.

It just not possible, the virgin boxes are encrypted. you can do with Freeview.

Virgin simply would not allow it and it would be illigal to try,.

you can Watch the box so to speak. so use the output of the box and watch that. you would always need the remote of the virgin box to change the channel. so would seem a but pointless
