I have a number of home films that I’ve loaded into Plex Media server on a Ubuntu server. I used MP3tag from a client to create separate individual tags under the “artists” tag. Those work properly. What I can’t do is correct some initial artists tags I created using semicolons instead of commas as separators between names.
They show up as one person id’d as xxx;yyy instead off two persons id’d of xxx and yyy.
I can get this to work on new entries, but not on the existing data. I’ve used MP3 to overwrite with both blank spaces, using proper CSV format and using only one entry instead of multiple.
How do I either overwrite the existing metadata of the individual files (the video files well separated into different subject folders) or folders within the library.
This didn’t work. I even tried to strip away the metadata and rename the files. According to MP3tag, I did so, but on the mp4’s in question. Plex somehow keeps reading the old metadata.
Is the Collections Tag in Plex a specific tag in the Plex database (and not readable in any metadata editor?
Plex reads the Album tag as collection information for movies.
The purpose of the Plex Dance is for Plex to “forget” it knew this particular video. If you follow the steps verbatim it’ll pull only the information from that file when you add it again.
I think I am getting a better handle on it. Using MefiaInfo, I discovered that there are three tags that could impact what is going on: Actor, Performer and Artist. (Some of these “tags” may be different software package names for the same thing.). If “Actor” is set as xxx;yyy, I get the problem. Apparently if either actor or performer is set to xxx, yyy. It is ok.The problem seems to be the source metadata and not Plex. Finding and editing the actual source has been a challenge, but I think I have found the tools to do so.
I have not been able to find the Collections Tag that you assign in Plex in any metadata editor under “Album.” Maybe the Album tag for MP3’s is what is being read by the metadata editor. I think I don’t understand video metadata well enough. Are you sure that the “Collections” tag is
Album? Other tags I set from the Edit menu on Plex do see to show up in Metadata editors (Maybe I need to find a better editor?).
Cleaning all metadata out and doing the Plex Dance finally fixed everything. You were right: Entering a tag in MP3tag under the Album field does correspond to Collections.
