Enabling local TV extras

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

So ever since Plex moved over to use its own TV series agent I haven’t been able to see any of my locally stored TV series extras. I used to name them according to The TVDB naming conventions and it was fine.

So let’s take, for example, The Last of Us (as it is hot at the moment, can’t stand it myself but it’s the most popular thing on my server).

My server is running on a Mac, from an external HDD
I have a Folder structure Plex 3 / TV / The Last of Us (2023) / Season one.

I have tried putting a folder called Featurettes in the The Last of Us (2023) folder and the Season one folder, but neither time is it recognised.

The featurettes has three featurettes in it : Invitations to set, Queerness in conversation Bill and Frank, and Scene in Black Kievonn Woodard and C J Jones

I have other folders with other extra types and also all the DVD extras for Deep Space Nine and BD extras for Picard and I have the same problem

Never had this issue before the change so if anyone can advise I’d be grateful.

I have looked on the support database.

Make that

Plex 3
TV <- this is the folder linked to your tv show library
    The Last of Us (2023)
      Season 01
        Featurettes
          …

Plex hasn’t supported local extras before that… unless you were running some 3rd party agent.

Also keep in mind that not all platforms support will display local extras for all tiers of a show (show, season, episode)!

So how did it work before then? I used to be able to rip the extras from a TV show DVD, and follow the extras convention on the TV DB to name the extra and as long as it appeared on the TV DB then it would match it and show.

Anyway - I have tried your suggestion and unfortunately that didn’t work :(. Have you got any other ideas?

If you name them to correspond to the TVDB database then they should be in a Specials folder. Using The Last of Us since that was your example.

Plex 3
    TV
        The Last of Us (2023)
            Specials
S00E01 Inside the Episode - 1 <- pulled from TVDB Specials in the Season tab
            Season 01

If there are other extras not listed on TVDB then the article that @tom80H mentioned would apply.

And I was still wondering about the meaning of „TVDb extras convention“. @shondreas‘ interpretation makes more sense than what I had come up with so far

Personally I try to only use the specials / season 0 folder for actual specials, while treating everything else as extras (no matter if those are listed on TVDb/TMDb/… or not).
With extras, make sure to…

  1. …refresh the show’s metadata for the Plex TV Series agent to pick up your extras
  2. …use a client that’s capable to display the kind of extras you’re planning to add

ahh so you can still use the specials folder. As the support document that I read before posting (the same one that tom80H linked to) didn’t mention that I assume you couldn’t.

That said - these featurettes I’m talking about don’t appear on The TVDB and I have followed the instructions and they still don’t show. They don’t show on the server on my Mac or my Apple TV where I watch content.

Can you move that Featurette folder to some other show, run a library scan, then grab and post your server logs here. I’d like to check what is happening.

Specials are part of the „regular“ show content (usually this is full episodes running outside the official schedule, e.g. Dr Who X-Mas specials). They’re documented in the main support article on how to handle episodes / tv-show files.

As per the extras support article, those clients aren’t able to display season-level extras.
If you’re having a mobile client (Android, iOS), Roku or other smart TV app (except for Android TV / Apple TV), the season extras should be showing up.

Edit: alternatively you could move the featurettes folder to the show level for now, refresh the show metadata and check if they’re showing up.
