Synology NAS setup...anyone free to help me?

I’ve recently gone from a Mac mini to a Synology NAS running Plex. For someone with little experience, I believe I’ve done well. I’ve worked with networking a little before but this is new stuff to me with the NAS.

I’ve had the ‘indirect play’ message since I’ve set everything up. Also, my Remote access

Is there anyone out there with experience more than mine willing to go through some screen shots and settings to verify I’m doing this properly? Direct connection and port-forwarding is the knowledge I lack at this point.

I promise I’ve spent many hours trying to read this before asking! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First check : do you have a PUBLIC IP on your Internet ?
Describe your ISP connection ?

On your Plex, go to “Settings” , then “Remote Access” , what does it say ? What IP’s do you see there ?

Port-forwarding done on your router ?

You would not be the first one that sits behind CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) with some 100.x.x.x IP and therefore can NEVER get a “direct” Remote Access working. (always “indirect” through a relay)

I’m not sure I have a public IP…how can I check that?
My ISP is a fiber service here in Louisiana.

Right now it says my remote access is available…

Private 192.168.x.x : 32400 Public 76.72.xx.xx : 0 Internet

I’ve never set up port forwarding in my router or NAS.

Thanks again!

Probably the UPNP is not working very well. It should be disabled anyway. I don’t like the 76.72.x.x:0 (the “zero” value at the port-number)

On my setup, it indicated X.X.X.X:32400 on the Internet/Public side.
You can always select the checkbox “select manually port” just below that and put 32400 in there.

Now you need to go on the router and get 1 port-mapping/forwarding in place pointing to the IP of your NAS (which is hopefully a “fixed” IP on your LAN) and map TCP/32400 “through” to that server and you are done.

Hello. I’ve had plex for awhile but new to synology. Everything I find doesn’t help me. I have synology DS920+. I have tried installing the plex package from the beta package. version 1.21.0-3744. I have given it permissions but I get not authorized when trying to get to plex media. It pulls up the IP address/web/index.html#!/setup/a long string of numbers and letters… if I remove this, I can my account. However when I click on “Your media” it just tells me to download plex media server. I have downloaded the newest version. 1.25.2.5319-7000. I get the same issue w/ this as well. I even installed using the option "Claim server, either way I don’t get anywhere. I’m wonder if there is somebody that can help me.

Please don’t use this version. We’re trying to get Synology to update or remove it.
They do not reply.

Please use any version higher than 1.24.2.4973 . 1.24.2.4973 is the first version of Plex which is 100% compatible with DSM 7.0-40890 (final public release of DSM 7)

If you mix 1.21.0.3744 with 1.24.2 or above, you get a mess which results in multiple incomplete server installations.

We have created the Synology FAQ to help with first time setup as well as have answers to other common questons.

Full FAQ:

I’ll disable UPNP and see what happens. I will also set up that routing (which I still don’t quite understand HOW in my own router), but I’ll give it a shot! :grinning:

I do have the “select port manually” unchecked. Sometimes it will connect directly and sometimes not.

Weird but I’ll keep trying! I do have a static IP set for the NAS.

If I post up some screen caps of my routers settings would you be able to help me set it correctly?

Go ahead and post some, we’ll see. Do you know the type/make of your home-router ? Might be some online manual too explaining how to “set” a port-forward.

I think that solved my issue, but I dug into it a bit more and found out how to set the port forward in my router…it’s not intuitive at all but I got it.

Have to click on the particular device you want to set the port forward and enable port forward for that particular device THEN set the port forward rule. Internal 32400 and external 32400 and save.

My NAS server now shows a direct connection and remote is checked and green showing good to go.

I think that did it, but I’ll watch and test and check back in later.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Ok, so a few things to note. Keeping the check box for manually specify public port after setting the port forward in my router actually stopped me from watching anything outside of a wi-fi network.

I unchecked that and tried again and everything works as expected.

Funny thing…the remote connection regularly shows not available outside of my network but I can still watch videos outside of the network!

Go-to73, I just did same - MacMini to Synology.

I moved my media folders to Synology, but can’t access any of the content.

When I add folders in PLEX, I can drill down as far as the drive (which I’ve called “MEDIA”), I can’t select folders within.

How did you select media folders ?

It would help to know how you created everything.

Create a new shared folder and called it whatever you like.

Inside of there create the media folders…Pictures, Movies, TV Shows, etc. Drop the files in each respectively and it will be good for that step.

From there you should be able to drill down into the proper folders from the Plex app or web interface.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the quick reply.

My DS220+ is in a RAID mirror configuration (one drive copies the other).

The shared folder is called MEDIA and exists on Volume 1: Btrfs.

This is how it looks from the File Station :

When pointing PLEX to find media, I can’t drill down past the MEDIA folder … which means I can’t select movies, TV, etc…

You’re welcome, and I get what you’re having an issue with.

I put all my Folders and files under the PlexMediaServer folder. Works like a champ.

As a sidenote, I’d get a decent USB storage drive of some kind and move your Time Machine backups there. No need to clog up the NAS and streaming with endless MAC backups hehe.

If I may comment here??

DO NOT PUT MEDIA IN PlexMediaServer !!!

The warnings are written in SIX languages.

That is for the app’s use. It is only visible so you can make backups of PMS.

If you’re having a permissions problem when using your own shared folders,

Please read this How-To

Placing media in the PlexMediaServer shared folder is as DANGEROUS as putting media in the Plex shared folder under DSM 6.

If you make a mistake, you’ll lock up PMS and be forced to erase it all and start over.

Absolutely…thank you.

I followed someone else suggestion and did it that way. Ok then I’ll get right on moving that over now.

@go-to73

You might what to let that person know to change as well.

else fear the wrath of @ChuckPa

 :beers:

Yes sir, that worked perfectly. Moved all my folders and files over…then followed that guide to reset the permissions and boom the folders show up for adding.

I just needed to edit my folder locations and it’s scanning now. Thank you for that bit of advice I missed along the way!!!
