Hey, I see that you still have a bunch of the old plug-ins installed. It’s possible one of these is causing this. Delete all the plug-ins and restart PMS. See if this stops.
OK, done that. Lets see… ![]()
Nah, still doing it. This was this earlier this morning.
Hi @anon18523487.
My PMS is still doing the stupid folder-by-folder scans.
Is there anything else I can try to stop it?
Cheers,
G.
64-bit for Windows is now officially in beta. Plex Media Server - #531 by Ridley
- (Scanner) Improve scanner performance (#13804)
That should fix the issue. Even better, it should now scan even faster than it did under the 32-bit version.
I have NEVER seen Plex scan as fast as it does now.
It use to take 2~ days to scan, now it takes hours. w00t!
You must have a HUGE library if it still takes hours or a very underpowered NAS. ![]()
Glad you like the update. ![]()
Huge. ![]()
I upgraded to the x64 version of PMS.
It hasn’t stopped the painful TV Show library scanning:

Confirmation again today - PMS is doing this folder-by-folder scanning again.
So x64 didn’t fix it.
What else can be done to troubleshoot it?
Get me a new log with 1.29.0. PMS will still scan each folder, but it should be a lot faster.
Here are the logs.
It finished scanning at 17h26 on 27/9/20.

Your logs only go back to 22:54:47, Sept 27th, so it doesn’t capture the end of the scan. I’d actually prefer to see the start of the scan.
Can you go ahead and start a new scan? Let it run for 10 minutes, and get me the server logs.
If you can then catch the end, a new log for that too.
Hmm. Actually, I do see some scanning activity in your logs. This is for your tv show library.
It shows that you have the option enabled to auto-scan when a change is seen and it is seeing a lot of changes. My guess is that something is causing these changes in your files so when you run a scan, it is rescanning some files again so it takes longer.
When I perform a manual scan, it doesn’t do the folder-by-folder mode. See attached logs.

I had previously disabled the data de-duplication and backups on this server, and that didn’t prevent it. (They are re-enabled now.)
I have just added exclusions for all the TV Show folders to the Windows Security Anti-virus.
I don’t know what other processes that read the disk I can stop.
It looks like your tv show library is directly pointed to the root of a fileshare.
\\Doris4\tvarchive\Downton Abbey\Season 1\Downton Abbey - s01e07 - Episode Seven.mkv"
Point it to a folder instead.
i.e. \\Doris4\tvarchive\TV Shows\Downton Abbey\Season 1\Downton Abbey - s01e07 - Episode Seven.mkv"
Make sure that this file server has always accurate date/time. If it’s a NAS, enable the ntp client.
Interesting. I’ll try that now.
Hang on - is there any danger to the library metadata customisations I’ve made if I move all the folders down one level?
OK, so went ahead and moved the TVArchive folder set into a sub folder (‘TVArchive’) off the root of the Share.
PMS is now having to re-scan every folder in that set. This is about 1/3 of my overall TV Shows library.
Is there a way to edit the database to quickly add in the additional folder to the TV show path for the other two Share\folders that make up my TV Shows library?
I only know of one sure-fire way: editing the database directly.
I read thru all the threads on this issue of changing a library path by editing the database and it seemed far from conclusive how to do it with a guaranteed outcome. So I went ahead and moved the other 2/3 of the TV Shows library to sub-folders under the share name. They have now finished re-scanning and sorting out the metadata.
So now to keep an eye on the scanner and see if it does the slow folder-by-folder thing again.
