I’m having a problem with my Plex recognizing this year’s MasterChef US version. I’ve attached screenshots of 1) my Mac finder window showing the files in question, and 2) The main screen showing the red trashcan. Episodes 1,4,5,7 show up as unavailable on the screen that has all the shows’s episodes. Thoughts?
The Red Trashcan icon will appear when your Plex database contains a media file record and that file can no longer be found on disk by PMS.
That can happen if you reorganise your media and move files to other folders etc. without removing the file from Plex first.
It can also happen if the file/folder permissions are changed and Plex is no longer able to read the contents of a folder or file.
A faulty file system on the drive itself can also cause this behaviour. You often have to reformat and restore the file system on the drive to correct that and in some cases, you need to replace the drive as it can be related to Bad Sectors appearing on the drive.
You should:
- Check that the file still exists on your drive/s in the location that Plex expects to find it.
- check and correct all permissions for the file and the folders it is stored in and make sure Plex has read access at least to the file/folders.
Assuming since you mention Mac finder, the files are actually on your Mac and not a remote drive/NAS?
If it is on a NAS and it’s mounted over SMB, be aware of this issue that may cause files to go unavailable, or plex to identify them as unavilable: Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing - #638 by Bat_Mang
Also if you have it set to not empty the trash and you replace a file, the old file will stay listed and show the trashcan even though the new file exists. Emptying the trash will remove the old file and get rid of the icon.
