I use Express VPN on my MacBook along with Plex server and stream to my Apple TV. I do not stream anything remotely. Occasionally, the Plex server would lose connection near the end of an episode. From what I understand, this has something to do with Plex marking an episode as watched. During the handshake, the VPN disconnects and the Plex server goes down. I was using an older version of ExpressVPN and updated so I could use the split tunnel function. I added the Plex Server app and gave permission through the system settings. However, that also seems to not be working, as the VPN disconnects at the end of an episode. If I quit Express VPN completely, my Plex server stays active and automatically plays the next episode.
Indeed. I’ve run Express VPN and Plex together for years without issue until a few weeks ago. I’ll have to dig through my router settings. I set them up many years ago (Apple Extreme). I should add I have this same issue when I bring my MacBook to our vacation property that uses Eeros.
Have you checked the ExpressVPN client for a setting for allowing local network traffic. VPN software can be set to block a device from talking to other device on the local network so possible a setting for that has been reset/added when you upgraded the client for the split-tunneling feature.
I think I may have found the reason for the issue. In system settings/battery, there’s a toggle for “Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.” I enabled this, and haven’t had an issue in 24 hours. I’ve never previously touched this setting. Perhaps my recent updating to Tahoe did something? No idea.
