I run two pcs, when I use expressvpn on one while downloading my friends cannot access my plex server on my other pc. So it’s either download or allow access one or the other. I’ve since learned that I can tell the expressvpn to ignore my plex server thereby allowing me to do both at the same time. My attempt to set it up which appears simple didn’t work. Anyone familiar with it that can walk me through the process? Ty
When you run ExpressVPN, where do you set the connection? If at your router, it routes ALL household traffic through the VPN. If done on the computer itself, then it should NOT affect the Plex server if that is a separate computer and you are not using a VPN on it.
As for having a VPN ignore Plex, it’s typically called a “split VPN”, where you can configure it one of two ways:
- either configure the VPN to ONLY use it for program X
- or configure it to use the VPN for everything EXCEPT program X.
I use Nord, but it is a client-based VPN connection, not for my entire household. When that is enabled, that should (and doesn’t) do anything to the rest of the traffic in my household
I use expressvpn on my pc not the router. If I download on my pc #2 and run my plex server on my pc # 1 people cannot access my plex server it says unavailable or something similar. Both pcs are plugged into the wall via Ethernet cable using the same internet router.
It’s called split tunneling and when I followed the prompts and selected the plex forum folder it seemed to work for a few minutes and then my friends service would drop off and when I went back to check it was like I never selected the plex forum. I was hoping someone familiar with it could walk me through properly perhaps with screen shots. My selecting of the plex server didn’t seem to take and hold long
PC1 = Plex Media Server
PC2 = Downloads + ExpressVPN
Correct?
If so, there is no need to configure split tunneling, since ExpressVPN is not running on the same PC as Plex Media Server.
