I have a large collection of personally ripped classical CDs, tagged with Composer as well as Artist (the performer/s) and Plex is useless for searching/indexing as it currently stands. This is the one feature that would tip me over to getting a lifetime Plex pass.

Adding another voice here (as well as a switch to make sure the composer displays in the music player rather than the artist when the Composer field is populated).

As a software developer I know the work needed to implement this request, at best it’s a minor change. Sometimes as a company it is better to stop work on one major issues and address 20 smaller ones to clear the backlog and make your user base happy. Yes a crash is major when it happens but often impacts a small percentage of your users, a few percent. 20 minor enhancements will make 1,000’s happier. You need to change priorities or make Plex open source and I’ll patch my own system.

Would love to use Plex for music streaming, but it’s literally unusable without a composer tag. Not just true of classical music, all music is composed by someone.

Count me in here is as well. I tag composers in all my music but it is especially necessary with classical music. Given the lack of response here I don’t think this is going to do any good but I am joining my voice to this request.

I posted a ‘+1’ to this thread back in Sept '17. Absolutely nothing has changed, and as far as I know, no Plex employee has ever responded. Is there some other feature request mechanism we should be using? This is like shouting into the void.

Since all votes were lost with the new forum changeover (and since the new software has a voting feature), I have taken the opportunity to rework one of my ID3 tag feature requests into a more comprehensive request for tag support.
This would be a great opportunity to consolidate all the votes that were spread across so many threads before, and maybe get some much-needed attention.
Hm, very interesting to see all the requests about a missing index for “composer”.
I use Twonky running on my NAS (QNAP) and I am very happy to have such an index for
“composer” and also “artist-index”, means grouped by ABC, DEF, GHI, etc for easier finding. I temporarily installed PLEX to see what other DLNA-server-provider are offering, but it looks like PLEX is more for the video-people. Here is a screenshot from my Twonky-Web-page which is also shown with these entries on all my DLNA-players.
The earliest post about the composer tag I could find goes back to 2009 (!). Is there any way we can tell the devs how important this is for classical music??
About all we can do is keep bringing it up, and add your vote to this comprehensive request for tag support.
@elan has alluded to “awesome general scanning and metadata upgrades”. Let’s hope this is part of that.

I think voting only works for Plex Pass users
Not anymore. Everyone can vote. The difference now is that we only have a few votes to cast. Plex Pass members have 5 votes, non-members have 3. The voting button only appears in the Feature Request forum.
Personally, I think 5 and 3 are not enough. If you agree, you might add a note to this thread.
@elan with the beautiful new music player, and tidal, can we please get composer field info made available??

Yeah, we’ve definitely been talking about some schema upgrades needed (e.g. multiple artists per album/track) and some classical improvements are on the list as well. Can’t promise a timeframe, but something we’ve definitely discussed.

Would love to know how close your list and my list are. 
If you are implementing all, or even most, of what’s in my list, I could move my vote to something else. This is a huge disadvantage caused by the frustratingly limited number of votes we have now.

Just discovered Plex. It’s running beautifully on my Raspberry Pi.
BUT … without a Composer field and the ability to sort music by composer the online player is next to useless to me. Such a shame for a nice, elegant player. This really is a deal breaker.
