[Feature Request] metadata file like the poster file . . .

I would love to be able to create a custom metadata file to be put into a directory with the media much like subtitle and poster files are currently implemented. It could be an XML file that would have the same fields as displayed in the Plex screen (and presumably similar to the structure in the Plex database). I would use this for personal videos and music with does not show up in IMDB databases and for those problem matches which I just can’t seem to get the metadata to down load . . . or the descriptions in IMDB are something I wouldn’t want to show on my home screen.

I would create a custom metadata file just like I find or create a poster file when what is being offered by IMDB or TVDB just doesn’t look or feel right.

you could try the “Metadata agents for exported XBMC library” which uses “.nfo” sidecar files with your media. They are actually XML files that you can create/edit yourself. I use that agent in a libraries I have set up specifically for trailers and music videos, as well as the few times the regular agents can’t find a movie.

There are some programs out there that will create the nfo files to get you started. They usually have the same or similar data that Plex has discovered, but once the XML file has been created you can edit it who you choose. I don’t know if they work with an audio only music file, you might have to do some research.

Some info here:

Using .nfo files is a great idea. Can Plex server be configured to look for .nfo files before going out and looking at IMDB or TVDB?

Here’s some info the Kodi community has done on .nfo files:

No need to reinvent the wheel unless you can make a better one.
