File with weird (doubled? tubed?) audio on Plex for Windows. PMP plays it correctly

Server Version#: 1.25.5.5492
Player Version#: 1.40.1.2823-6f60f3a7

I have a file that plays with a weird, perhaps doubled or tubed, audio on Plex for Windows. I tested the same file with Plex Media Player and MPC-BE and they both play the file correctly.

I also did the Plex Dance and it didn’t help.

I’m providing a sample of that file, as well as a recording (done with OBS) of the audio output Plex for Windows produces.

SampleBoth.zip (23.7 MB)

Could you provide a screenshot of the preferences page under
Settings - Plex for Windows - Player

Also, open the “old” Sounds control panel of Windows and take a look at how your sound interface is fonfigured. The number of speakers in particular, as well as whether there are any “enhancements” activated.

Here are both of those, but please note that this only happens with this file and also that the problem persists if I plug in headphones in (I’m running Plex — both the server and the player — on my laptop).

I assume this is a laptop with only stereo speakers, right?

Disable all effects, using the checkbox shown in the right window.
I see there are some additional tabs available in the right window. No doubt they are specific to the speaker system of your laptop. They very likely try to enhance the sound using psychoacoustic tricks.
I’d experiment with the settings on “Som Espacial”, and on “Acer True…”.

That being said: the true cause of this weird effect is the audio format in your file. The specific sound configuration of your laptop is only an amplifying factor.
It is in 5.0 surround format. However, it was most likely not originally recorded that way. The producer later chose to “upmix” the sound artificially to surround format. This upmix process can cause some weird sonic artifacts, particularly when you try to play it on a speaker system which is not a true surround sound setup.

Correct.

Still, how come other players, including Plex Media Player, can play the file properly?

This file is a direct rip from a DVD I own. I actually have dozens of files created similarly (and even in the exact same batch, as there are multiple episodes per disc) which are played with no issues.
