Films/TV not "matching" so no metadata at all

Player Version#: N/a (web)

New files are being found, but plex is not finding any metadata through the agents and so falls back to the analysis thumbnail. If I do an ‘auto match’, plex just combines the files together with no name, no metadata etc. A manual search for a match comes back with nothing.

Trying to match a film that had worked prior to the latest few PMS updates also returns nothing… I have tried Plex Movie and TMDB for data, same results. The server can see plex.tv and themoviedb.org.

What in the wide wide world of sports kind of name is that? If it is Alita, use the name it has in IMDB - Alita Battle Angel (2019)
That’s all you have to do.

Like I said, it is doing it for all, that was merely an example. No results come back for any film or episode no matter what it is called.

Change your agent to IMDB
diasble IPv6 in your internert adapter
Try the name I gave you (with the date) as the file name instead of the garbage you have now.

Before everyone starts changing agents, May I see some of the directory structure and file names in use?

I ask this because if the naming isn’t good, no agent will match anything.

Remove the colon : and try again. I think that is screwing up the search

The Alita film was one Plex had already matched, I used it as an example…

Mine is currently the same. Every media file has stopped auto matching. Can’t manual match either. Even after changing agents. It was fine a couple of days ago.

Does the IMDB log show any errors ( it is in the plugins log folder )

No errors, actually shows nothing regarding IMDB requests, just the logs of the plugin initialising a couple of days ago (I replicated the problem just prior to checking these logs).

Since installing Version 1.16.6.1592 I’ve had an odd problem with new movie matching.

Tried the searches using the different agents but my title line was the default pulled from the file name. Name of file inception.2010.mkv the Match function was able to be selected and then Search Options, it would show in the Title box ‘Inception 2010’ and would not find a single match with PMDB or TMDB.

If I deleted the year from the title box so it would be ‘Inception’ only and both with and without year in the Year box it would find and list the matches for both PM&TMDB

The year in the title search looks like it’s a TMDB site issue rather than a Plex API info transfer issue. Go to TMDB and put Inception 2010 in the search and nothing, remove the year and all good.

May I see some of the file names you are using and can you give an example of the structure?
Also, if these are MP4 files, have you confirmed the embedded metadata has been removed or is correct?

For anyone using /media as their media location, if you’re the Gnome desktop, Nautilus is your nemesis.

Media automatically mounted there exists and is available only to you. Regardless what you put there or what permissions you assign, plex will never see it due default Linux security.

You need to move it (make an /etc/fstab mount) away from there and setup proper permissions.
I have a how-to if needed.

Sorry for slow response.
File name example but many similar, so I’ll stick to the on mentioned.

What I have noticed if I go to TMDB and put ‘Inception 2010’ it finds nothing.

So it looks like TMDB have changed something in their search system so when Plex tries to find a new file from the filename inception.2010.mkv it uses the date as part of the name. Plex Movie DB seems to do the same thing.

Here’s what I’ve tried and which works (TMDB PMDB get metadata):
/Media/Movies/I-L/Inception.2010/Inception.mkv - not work
/Media/Movies/I-L/Inception/Inception.2010.mkv - works
Changing file name and removing year didn’t help but changing the folder name resolved it.

So the search criteria comes from the folder name.
I then tested something else thinking it’s the numbers being assumed as sequence rather than year, and yes this one works.

If parentheses are present, the number is interpreted as the year the title was released.
If not present, then interpreted as part of the title itself.

An example for television: Space 1999
The name is “Space 1999”. The name isn’t “Space”, with season 1 starting in 1999.

The naming has always been to put year of release / season 1 within the parenthesis

In your example: “Toy Story 4” is the formal title. It’s not “Toy Story 4 2010”
“Toy Story 4 (2010)” provides supplemental information by adding the year “Toy Story 4” was released “(2010)”.

I understand what you are saying, it just grabs the year after the last ‘.’ in the file name before the file type designation and assumes it’s part of the title. This previously was not the method of operation but as of latter 1.15.x seems to be the way plex grabs from the file structure.
Note that it’s the folder name where plex is grabbing the year and assuming it’s part of the file metadata not the file name.
If that’s the way things are going to be I can work around it but just wanted others to know this is why and that they can find it in the forum and deal with it.

I would however have thought that it would be part of the analysis and anything with 4 digits may be assumed to be a year and if no results with the year, to then search without it automatically rather than get no results at all. I don’t know why parentheses should need to be included to define it’s supplemental information for this search to exclude the year from the search parameters.
To the ‘Space 1999’ example I’d also rather have the one exception for the series rather than every movie I add with its title suffixed with year of release needing special attention, particularly as once the match is correct for ‘Space 1999’ it would add every episode based on the correct source of metadata done under fixmatch.
