Finally got hit with discount bin posters, overriding my local posters

How do I determine what caused them to change for the first time in Feb of 2025? I have the new Plex movie scanner enabled, with prefer local/use local assets. All movies have them, and it just recently updated to the discount bin posters with things like “in 4K UHD” and “available at Redbox” style stuff. The posters on disk are still present and the correct ones.

Trying to find a way to diagnose what changed, and prevent it in the future before I try to migrate away from Plex. Any suggestions on how to diagnose?

Re-scanning doesn’t switch the local poster, so it (to my understanding) seems to think I went in and picked my preferred poster as the lower quality ones? Is there anyway to reset the library without removing watch status? Alternatively, if not, since poster locking doesn’t seem to be a thing, are their network addresses for grace note that plex uses I can block at the network level?

Is your Plex server running on a Mac, with media files on a Synology NAS?

Yes, currently it is. Running on a M2 series Mac, and Synology 923 for file storage. All plex on the Mac.

I can migrate it off of a Synology to an unraid system in a few months, but in the interim is there any fix for this with Synology and Plex?

On your server, ensure you have disabled:
Settings → [Select Server Name] → Library → Empty trash automatically after every scan

This will prevent Plex Media Server from removing items which it can’t find during a scan, thus preventing them from being detected as new when they reappear.
