I am not getting any thumbnail images to display for a library set up under the Home Video type format, they are all just black squares. But all other libraries show the correct thumbnails. Why is this happening on my Fire Cube? On my Roku all the Home Video library contents display thumbnails correctly. Please fix!
It is a known issue with the Android TV app, I don’t think it has ever done it. Sorry I do not have an ETA for a implement that
So it’s a ‘known issue’ who knows for how long but nobody is working on an improvement? How encouraging. With all the updates Plex constantly pushes out you would think a bug like this would take some priority in the next update! Again, please have someone look into this and correct it. Thank you!
For all I know it is a limitation with the platform. “Other video” libraries are not used very much so they do tend to take a back seat to other things unfortunately
That makes sense that the library isn’t used that much. But all we are talking about is getting it to display thumbnails generated by the Plex server when it scanned the files. So hopefully it gets sorted out. I am a long time user of Plex on Roku, using this type of library all the time and it always worked fine.
I just got some Amazon Fire devices and found out I won’t be able to see the images in this type of library, which is unexpected, annoying and very disappointing.
I’m also not a fan of the Plex app settings in Fire devices either, the Roku app seems to be much better designed. I hope Plex updates the app on Fire platforms to match what Roku has. Please keep making improvements.
I made an “other videos” category for music videos. After I got done with 100 of them none of the posters show and none of the videos show as played so they’re all stuck in the continue watching (also a known issue)
To be clear, these are posters I manually added to each video inside the folder. (cover.jpg)
This category has always had thumbnails. That’s what showing for me right now, I just want the posters I added to show
I understand what the problem is. It is showing the default thumb taken from a frame of the video instead of the one you have chosen for it.
I did some investigating after my original post and I believe I have solved the problem, at least on my end. But there is still definitely an error happening on the Plex app for Fire devices which I will explain.
I have always watched my files on Plex on the Roku app, for years, until I got my Fire Cube today, I disliked the loading background when you press the play button to load a video on the Roku. So a while back I saved a black 16:9 image to a folder on my computer and then I have been manually adding that image as the ‘Background’ for each file in the “Other Videos” library each time I add a new video.
So now when I played a video on the Roku instead of seeing the thumbnail image as it loads all I saw was a black screen, which is exactly what I wanted. Well doing this caused the issue when switching to the Fire Cube.
Apparently on Fire devices Plex is not taking the thumbnail images for the videos from the ‘Poster’ field but is instead taking the images from the ‘Background’ field. This is why all of my videos were showing up as black thumbnails in the library.
I’ve changed the images from my custom black image to one of the three auto generated thumbnail images created by Plex when it scanned the files and voila, now I have thumbnail images for all of my files again and the problem is solved on my screen.
Now that we know what the issue is, Plex needs to address this. For Fire devices Plex is using the thumbnail image from the wrong category. It needs to use the ‘Poster’ image and not the ‘Background’ image.
I’m sure this can be fixed as it seems like a minor glitch, someone please address this and get it resolved. Thank you.
My posters are showing up fine in Plex Web, Plex for Windows and mobile android apps (phone & tablet). All show the poster I put inside the folder with the video.
I thought this was only happening on the Fire TV but I connected a Nvidia Shield and it does the same thing…No posters show
the app on Fire TV and Shield are both the same Android app.
