Plex Server Version#: 1.24.4.5081 (and previous versions in since August)
Plex Player Version#: 8.23.2.28087
FireTV: Toshiba_50LF621U21 OS version: Fire OS 7.2.4.4
My FireTV shows the error “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.” often when trying to play media; usually in the morning. Scrolling, searching and theme music functions normally. The Plex server is active and functional for all my other devices and users at the time of error. Disabling “Sign in automatically” seems to fix everything.
I collected some logs from my TV. The only errors that stood out were FFMPEG certificate mismatches (forgot my subdomain in the hostname settings) and “[Player] Error reported: UnknownError (null)”
Total speculating here, but my best guess is some authentication token expires and doesn’t get reestablished properly when the TV wakes form sleep. But that’s just a guess.
On each Device I have installed PMS Client Version 8.23.2.28087 (9f2ee47b). The Server itself is on Version 1.24.3.5033.
The Server runs on a dedicated Host outside my network, until the 1st of October everything was working fine. Since then I receive the error message mentioned in the topic of this thread and by the Topic opener.
Everything else (which is using the new Root Certificate) on the Fire TV Devices are working properly and fine with secure connections except Plex. I need to set “Unsecure connections” to “Always” to be able to use Plex.
That cannot be the solution from Plex! Nowadays almost no one and nothing is using secure connections. Even on Smart TVs from Samsung with newer Platform-Version the Plex Client isn´t running anymore with secure connections.
Do Plex really wan´t to open up a security Issue by making the users use insecure connection whithout any ssl-encryption? Hopefully I don´t think so… yet.
After installing the Root Cert on your Fire TV Device you need to go to the Apps Section in your Setting, search for the Plex App and delete all Data and the Cache from the App. Once done just start the App, login again and amend your Settings.
