FireTV 4K crashes to home screen when playing video playlists

Fire TV 4K used to play a playlist I sleep to all night without issue, but now it will stop playback in the middle of the night. Longest it will run anymore is about 1-2 hours and then it quits. I’ve uninstalled the Plex app from the Fire Stick 4K, and today even did a factory reset on the Fire Stick and reinstalled Plex (guaranteeing I’d have the newest app version). Server version is latest off plex.tv ( v.1.40.1.8227-c0dd5a73e) running on Ubuntu 64-bit. The Fire TV 4K is direct wired ethernet so no wi-fi troubleshooting needed.

Anyone seeing this type of behavior on Fire TV 4K streaming units that used to work perfectly?

Do you have Passout Protection enabled in Player Experience settings

Yes, that setting was on and set to 2 hours! Was that added and enabled automatically in an update to the client? It must have. Hopefully that solves the issue. Thanks for the response and hopefully this thread will help solve it for others.

2hrs has been the behavior for years. We made a pref to allow users to change to something else or off in Oct of 2023 but 2hrs remained the default. Player Experience

Well, spoke too soon. It did it again despite setting Passout to “never”. What’s being played is a video playlist and every time it fails like this Tautulli shows the last episode it plays starting, then pausing, then stopping.

started paused stopped duration
02:45 3 mins 02:59 11 mins

Any other ideas?

I went to that episode and played it to be sure the episode itself isn’t a problem and it picked right up where it had aborted play at about the halfway point.

EDIT: I looked at the Plex Media Server.log and the only entry at the 02:59 time this morning is this:

So no real indication of an issue that I can tell. Nothing logged for 30 minutes prior to the episode aborting though, which is odd - shouldn’t it show the start of the episode playback since the episodes are only 20-22 minutes long each, which means the start of playback was well within the 30 minutes of gap in the log before the playback terminates.

I’ve enabled debug level logging (not verbose) and will see what shows up when it occurs again (presumably tonight).

I tested it one night, shuffling the same video playlist on the Fire TV and, in another room in the same house on an NVidia Shield. The Shield played all night but the Fire TV stopped again. So I switched to a Chromecast and it works fine.

Plex team - please troubleshoot the Fire TV Plex client as it appears to have a problem.
