Firestick not always playing next episode from playlist

Windows Plex server and Fire Stick 4k has been absolutely fine for months and months. Wife and I tend to fall asleep to a TV playlist running continuously. Last month or so it doesn’t always move onto the next episode, it just hangs at the end of the last one played. You can still press up on the remote, select next episode and it’ll play, but its not automatic. Trouble is that its not consistent and I realise those issues are hard to diagnose. It’ll run fine for x episodes and then suddenly not move on…but worked perfectly in the past.

Anyone seen this before and have a fix? Thanks!

I’m experiencing the same thing. I too use playlists to run in the background while sleeping. It seems random when it decides to do this and it’s not for one specific show. I can hit the fast forward button to go ahead 30 seconds and it resumes play. This is the only device doing this. Apple TV and windows player do not do this. Kinda annoying.

I also experience this randomly where it’ll says its about to play the next episode but then go to a black screen and still displays the previous episode. Happens on both my Nvidia Shield Pro and Firestick

Yes, mine is still doing it sporadically. Sometimes in the same evening it will play a few episodes on the playlist and then suddenly stop…black screen. But app still responds, I can press up on the D-Pad and then manually click onto the next episode. Really irritating.

I have been noticing this problem with my Amazon Fire HD8 tablet, I have a playlist of a bunch of youtube music video ripped to mp4, I typically let it play randomized in my background, but recently in the last month or two, after a video or two, it will go silent, with a static video preview pic, if I look at the player carefully, it looks like its playing the last video file, (based on duration) but with no video and no audio, so if i just let it play (silence) after the duration of silence, it will start the next song. If i ‘skip’ to next song, itll start playing ok, or if i skip to the next song when the video does play, its ok. very irritating.

I have the same problem on multiple devices. A pc and fire tv box and fire tv cube.

Also have multiple servers. One on a nas and one on a pc.

They all have this problem. It randomly will continue but most often will just go black screen with the clock rolling as if the next episode is playing. It’s been going on for about 2 months.

So can we narrow down from what everyone is seeing whether this is a server or client issue? Is everyone having the problem exclusively with an Amazon Fire product? I think shanebot you said you have the problem on the Plex client on PC?
Thanks, and stay safe out there.

FireTV App sucks, and plex is doing nothing.

I can confirm the same issue. It isn’t a server issue because I have a bunch of stuff synced for my daughter and I shuffle it in the car while offline and it still does this.

Latest exo player or better yet VLC would fix many of these problems. There’s huge compatibility issues with the current player.

Vote here to update to the latest Exo Player.

Just wanted to chime in to say I’m having the same issues.

Doing a shuffle all episodes for a show will play one episode and then freeze at the end. I can’t recall specifically but it seems to be made worse after the skip into feature was implemented.

I mainly use Plex to shuffle Mickey mouse for my kids and this isn’t working :sob: lol

I am having same issue. It can be resolved by turning off new player. But it introduces issue of not being able to play some files. So I only did it for the stick my kids watch cartoons on. Mine where I watch movies I left on new player.

WOW!! Over three months now and this isn’t fixed yet. I am starting to see what people are saying now when they say that Plex has become a pile of garbage and that the developers are too busy spending their money to worry about customers any more. As long as they keep getting paid they won’t care about us. Emby’s starting to look better an better.

Having this issue on a SHIELD, its random and just doesn’t play the next episode - absolutely giving me the $HITS as kids watch 7m episodes so we are having to find the remote and skip manually every 7 minutes. REALLY starting to regret ever moving from Kodi, never had such elementary bugs with Kodi.

I will say that I’m now seeing this issue far less than I was a few months ago. At one point, literally none of my playlists would auto-play the next episode and I actually started using the VLC player app instead of the Plex app, but now it’s only now and again that this happens and i’m back to using Plex on the Firestick again.

I am having the same issue as well and have been for months. I used Plex mainly to shuffle cartoons for my young kids and I constantly have to hit Next after a show ends because it just has a freeze frame. For instance, S01E03 plays, at the end of the show it is supposed to shuffle to a new show but it tries to play the same show again with a frozen frame. If you let it continue, it will eventually get to the following show and play that one. This is so frustrating.

Has there been any updates on this? I’m still having this issue.

I have a firetv. Used to work great- I sleep to a particular 90s tv show about nothing on shuffle. It used to hang from time to time, but now every time.
At the end of the episode, the time remaining counter starts counting back up, and video continues to run black until I push down and skip forward to the next episode.
Came here to see if others might have had/solved this problem- but, judging by this thread, it appears it is not going to be repaired.

I fixed the problem by ditching Plex and going to Emby. For the last 6 months Plex has not auto played the next episode. The screen would either go black or freeze. Started using Emby a few weeks ago, haven’t had an issue since.
The other thing that stopped working in Plex was the ability to click on an actor and see their other movies/shows you have in your library. It works flawlessly in Emby.
It sucks that I paid for a lifetime member for Plex and issues like this have not been corrected. Kinda glad at the same time because I was able to find a better alternative. IMO, Emby also has a better layout. Only downfall to Emby is it doesn’t have streaming channels, so I guess I’m not completely ditching Plex.

This happened to me too. I also use Plex playlists to sleep to. The update to fix the ability to delete episodes from the playlist is what did it. I rolled back to plex version 8.11.0.22186 on my Fire TV. I still can’t delete episodes from the playlist thru the tv app but the playlist now advances like it should. I’m holding off on any updates until I get confirmation that playlists act properly as a whole like they used to many many months ago.
