Fix FireStick/Fire TV App

The old Plex app (8.11) on Firestick used to allow…

  1. Manual Connect with IP address which came in handy during power outages or the loss of the router. I understand that it comes with the automatic find feature if I’m the same network, but that Manual Connect option helped when it was not a simple, normal network.

  2. It also allowed for the use of an external player like VLC or MX player. It was reported that this feature was removed because of compatibility issues which left us using the integrated Exo player. Unfortunately, the Exo player seems to have issues with some of the video such as x265 and audio such as AC3 decoders. Files that play great with VLC and MX just cannot play on the integrated Exo player without dropping frames for the video or the audio causing videos to playback choppy. The only way to get smooth playback with the Exo player is to start the video and change the quality to Convert Automatically. If it auto plays another video with Convert Automatically already elected, you must change the setting to something else and then back to Convert Automatically before it plays fine. It is so annoying that family members refuse to utilize the Plex server because of that issue. And turning off direct play on the server is not an option as I do have other devices that work well with direct play. Maybe there is a way to turn off direct play in the app for the Fire products like you seem to be doing for the new Fire Vega products. But to have the external player as it still is in the Roku app would be better.

  3. Clean up the forums. There are massive amounts of forum posts that need to be archived as they are for older versions of Plex with different options and capabilities. This would make it so much easier to find relevant posts instead of numerous old posts that does not help you at all.
