I am pretty new at the Plex side but have to say I am impressed with a lot of the recognition. Naturally there are some which do not match up and with those, I have tried the ‘match’ and ‘fix match’ however, I am having issues with one particualr film and its remake.
The film is Salem’s Lot, 1979. Now when it came out on television originally, it was in two parts but my son bought it on disc as one film. Now in IMDB there is a number for the whole film (tt0079844) and also one for it in its two original parts (part1 : tt10937112, part 2: tt10937116). When I try to do a search on this, I end up with the new remake film due next year instead of the 1979 version. I have also tried doing a match on the movie database which had three numbers, one for the whooll 3 hour movie, and one each for the two parts which again, I could not even see that one as an option.
If you know of a way / can educate me, then please do as I am a fan of the '79 version compared to the 2004 version, maybe the new 2023(?) version will be better but I am old school!
Perhaps its something I have to add manually but in cases like these where there are TV movies in more than one part, which you can buy in ‘one part’, how do you match these?
Here is an example of how I have it named on disk…
Folder → Salems Lot (1979) {tmdb-16118}
Media within above folder → Salems Lot - S01E01-E02.mp4
Just use that within a TV library and it will match perfectly for you. BTW, the {tmdb-16118} is optional but useful as plex uses this to auto match ensuring a perfect match.
Thank you for the reply. I created a folder for it (to make life easier whilst testing) then tried renaming the file S01E01-E02 but Plex couldnt even see the file in the folder despite re-scanning then I created a new library type which it picked it up and seemed to work ok, many thanks. I was scratching my head a few times changing bits but it was all under a Films library not TV one. I’d prefer it under films but as you say, it was a tv show with two parts irrespective of buying it as a film etc…
I have some films in various folders as I figured this would be the best option but I guess it makes more sense to put all films into one ‘films’ folder and then get those that are in a series / or with sequel(s), into ‘collections’ - not tried those as yet but that makes sense.
Have to say again though, very impressed by the application, and many thanks again.
Keep in mind that Plex doesn’t allow mixing of different content types in a single library.
As you rename the file, make sure to movie it to a tv-show type library!
Yup, I shall remember that asI did try it under movies but it failed to find a match. I am still surprised someone else asked the same question on this same film (awesome film albeit old but a good one!)
Also love the ‘adding a trailer prior to the film’, I did that and had a trailer for Sneakers which worked pretty cool although the trailer was a vhs version which was weird but cool at the same time!. I tried a couple of others which worked great but I think a teaser woudl be better as the trailer was quite long and showed so much of the plot as it were, not Plex’s fault but pretty cool feature!

Think the fact it got released on DVD branded as a movie has confused folks. Salem’s Lot is most certainly a mini series which aired on TV over two nights.
As Tom mentioned, plex does not support mixed libraries. You cannot have movies in TV plex libraries or TV series in plex movie libraries. Plex will ignore the wrong content in a library.
BTW… if you haven’t seen these docs then they are recommended viewing for anyone setting up plex. 99% of the time when plex has content problems its down to naming, so getting that right from day 1 is HIGHLY recommended.
