Hey everyone,
Just wanted to share a recent issue I encountered with my Plex setup in case it helps anyone else out there.
I’m a Plex Pass Lifetime subscriber and the owner of my server. My account is part of a Plex Home setup with three other users. While I could connect to my server from pretty much every device I own — web client, Windows, iOS, Samsung TV, etc. — I couldn’t connect using the Plex app (v8.45) on my Apple TV 4K.
After following all the usual troubleshooting steps (as outlined in this support article), I was still stuck. Interestingly, 2 out of the 4 Plex Home users could connect via Apple TV, while the other 2 couldn’t.
Turns out, the root cause was the usernames for the problematic accounts — they included special characters (accented letters) and, in one case, a space. Once I removed those special characters from the usernames, all users were immediately able to connect to the server from the Apple TV.
What’s odd is that every other client I tested worked just fine with the original usernames, so this seems like a recent Apple TV-specific edge case. I know Plex updated their naming conventions a while back, but existing accounts were never forced to change — everything had continued working across all other devices.
Anyway, just thought I’d post this in case someone else runs into a similar head-scratcher. Sometimes it’s the little things.
