Did you friend send his invitation to the same email address,
which you used to create this plexaccount here to post in the forums?
If he did, go here https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/users-sharing
and accept the invitation on this page.
If he did send the invitation to a different email address, ask him to retract the invitation and invite the email (or the Plex username) you have already created.
Upon receiving the invitation email, don’t click on the link in hte email, but go to the above mentioned link.
I figured it out. My friend was inviting me via my email, but I guess the email association doesn’t work properly with Plex? He was able to add me via my username instead, which allowed the invitation acceptance to proceed as expected.
