Futurama Incorrect Metadata

Futurama Season 6 episode titles are correct, but summaries are incorrectly pulled from the split movies

I am using the Plex Series agent for Futurama (1999). My Season 6 files are the 26 Comedy Central episodes beginning with:

  • S06E01 — Rebirth
  • S06E02 — In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela
  • S06E03 — Attack of the Killer App!
  • etc.

The files themselves are correct. Plex plays the correct video, and the episode titles, dates and thumbnails match the actual episodes.

However, the episode summaries are wrong through at least S06E17. The summaries appear to be pulled from an alternate ordering where the four Futurama movies are divided into sixteen television episodes and placed in Season 6.

For example, Plex correctly identifies S06E01 as Rebirth, but displays this summary:

The crew fall for a scam while relaxing on the Nude Beach planet…

That is the plot of the beginning of Bender’s Big Score, not Rebirth. Plex’s own public Season 6 page currently shows the same title/summary mismatch, which suggests this is an upstream Plex metadata problem rather than a local file-naming issue.

I have tried the following:

  • Set the show’s episode ordering to TheTVDB (Aired)
  • Refreshed metadata for the entire show
  • Used Fix Match and rematched Futurama (1999)
  • Confirmed the individual Summary field is unlocked
  • Verified that the actual files, titles and thumbnails are correct

None of those steps corrected the summaries.

TheTVDB’s aired order correctly places Rebirth at S06E01 and contains 26 episodes in Season 6. Its alternate order instead places the four split movies at S06E01–S06E16, which appears to be the source of Plex’s mismatched descriptions.

For now, I am manually correcting and locking the affected Summary fields.

My plex setup uses TMDB as the default. I’m getting the correct episode summary for S06E01. You might just try selecting TMDB ordering for that show.

TLDR: Confirmed issue in Plex’s metadata.

I use TheTVDB(Aired), and My season 6 was correct, with Rebirth having the description “After a devastating spaceship crash, Professor Farnsworth attempts to resuscitate the crew with his birth machine.”.

However, to test this, I refreshed metadata on Season 6, and it now describes the plot to Bender’s Big Score. It seems that Plex’s own plot description for most of S6 uses the Movies-as-episodes order for that season. The name and possibly thumbnail are correct. I cannot test a new Futurama Season 6 to see if the episode thumbnails are from the wrong episodes.

Season 06 only gets back in sync at S06E17, which tracks with how screwed up S6 is. Plex now takes the description of the 4x4 (16) Season 6 episodes where the movies were turned into episodes. After that, it returns to normal.

The TMDB default is not working either, but thanks for checking napolij. Divideby0, if we’ve confirmed this is a Plex metadata registration error, I upload logs and wait and see if there is a fix. I’ve tested several other show orderings and none have fixed the issue.

I’ll also upload these incase anyone is interested.

Back in Sept 2025 a user at tmdb had a bunch of bogus edits changing the titles and summaries for various episodes in s06. I suspect they quickly then realised what they done was wrong as they reverted them and you can see the details https://www.themoviedb.org/u/eggoman92/activity.

I suspect the plex metadata mothership when it detected these initial changes they got stuck somehow with the summaries on their side and now are all messed up.

I’ve also double checked the external ids linking tmdb to tvdb and they are correct so someone from plex will need to fix this as its clearly an issue on their side.

@BigWheel FYI :slight_smile:
