Korrekt.
Q5: Where should I put my media files?
It is recommended that you open Control Panel > Shared Folders and create a folder named Media or similar.
When creating the folder, disable the Recycle Bin, then skip the ‘Encrypt the Shared folder’ and do not configure any advanced features.
On the permissions tab, make sure the folder has read/write permissions for both Plex and admin. If Plex is not installed yet, you will have to go back and edit the shared folder and give Plex the needed permissions after you have installed Plex.
You may also set user Plex to have Read Only permissions.
Note: this will prevent Plex from deleting any files and will ignore the Allow media deletion
setting in Plex Settings > Server > Library > Show Advanced
Open File Station and create the following folders inside the Media folder you created earlier:
Folder to Create |
Library Folder Path |
Movies |
Add only this folder to the Movies library |
TV Shows |
Add only this folder to the TV Shows library |
Music |
Add only this folder to the Music library |
Photos |
Add only this folder to the Photos library |
Other Videos |
Add only this folder to the Other Videos library |
Place the relevant media files into the appropriate folder above, Plex will pick up any files you add automatically, provided you have the Update my library automatically
option enabled in Plex Settings > Server > Library.
Note: DO NOT place any media or other files in the Plex
shared folder unless you are instructed to do so. The Plex shared folder is reserved for Plex system files and metadata etc. it is NOT for storing media.
Note: When creating any Shared Folder in Synology, you must give the relevant user/s R/W permissions to access that folder, otherwise no one will be able to use the folder at all. This is true of any Linux based Operating System.
Note: It is recommended that you do not store your Plex media files in the default Video
shared folder. This folder is reserved for use by Video Station and it has been known to cause issues with Plex in the past.
This method has two main benefits.
A) It allows Plex easy access to your media files and setting permissions is easier also.
B) it allows you to create a single mapped network drive on your PC/Mac/Linux machine with access to ALL of your media files, which makes adding and removing files easier.
It is also handy if you have PMS installed on your PC/Mac/Linux machine and you simply wish to store your media on the NAS.
Of course you may have PMS installed on the NAS also, making it easy to have a backup PMS server in case something should go wrong on movie night.
