General State of Plex Player on NVIDIA Shield

I’ve got an NVIDIA Shield Pro, and for the most part I’m loving Plex on it. It plays 4K content flawlessly, and the overall quality is good.

That being said, I’ve noticed a lot of weird issues with the player that my other players do not have. These include but are not limited to:

  • Actor information capping out at five or six entries, with any remaining entries simply being repeats of the first five or six
  • Playing music is hit or miss - sometimes it works fine, sometimes the whole app crashes when attempting to play a playlist or album
  • In the same vein, track information will not update upon completion of songs or albums
  • Browsing a library is typically smooth (60fps), but lately it’s been pretty hitchy, even after rebooting the Shield
  • When browsing episodes in a season, sometimes clicking too quickly (for example, advancing to the next episode) glitches a bit, and sometimes clicks don’t register, or appear to register but don’t. Clicking more slowly will mitigate this behavior
  • My “Continue Watching” section on the home screen is missing. I’ve enabled it in my customization settings, but about two weeks ago it just disappeared.
  • When checking the home screen customization options, I see my available options repeated in the list; so I see “Continue Watching”, then “On Deck”, then my libraries, then I will eventually see “Continue Watching” listed again, etc.

Is the Plex player on the Shield just the typical Android OS player, or is it specific to the Shield? Because I don’t have these issues on my Samsung Galaxy phone, so I’m just trying to figure this out. Is anyone else experiencing these issues, or similar?

might be ‘tv’ android specific, even though they come from the same releases

it’s not just you, I’ve seen some of the issues myself.

I think android is in a bit of state of flux (still?), when things will settle down/stable out, I don’t know.

you might try ‘reset customization’, and update to the current beta, which has some new ‘home’ screen functionality.

It’s not just you, the Android client in general is lousy. It was fairly stable then updates released after October 2020 have introduced one problem after another. Unreliable play, random content errors, things just disappearing from the menus. And god help you if you use the non-Plex streaming Live TV feature.

It was suggested in a different post to back up to a pre-October 2020 release.
I have gone to Embry in the meantime.

Resetting my customizations did the trick for getting “Continue Watching” to show up again on the home screen. Thanks for the tip.

As an fyi… the actor looping with 6 members is a bug which I believe will be fixed when the current beta client makes it to mainstream.

Hello,
I’m I the only one having trouble with the latest Plex media server update on my Nvidia Shield?
Since I updated it, I can’t load my libraries anymore. It says “This library is empty”.
I’m scared that the last update erased my library metadatas.
I tried to reboot the server and my Nvidia Shield but nothing works…
