The Amazing World of Gumball has a strange issue. The latest (reboot?) season 7 of the show will not match on Plex. Each of the 40 episodes show up as “Episode XX”, with no metadata.
There was a period of time where some of the metadata sites had it as a separate show entirely, but I notice that both TMDB and TVDB list it as season 7, with no separate show at all. IMDB seems to be the only metadata site that lists it separate, likely resulting in this issue.
How can this be fixed? Is it possible for Plex to duplicate this as S7 in “Amazing World”, while still allowing a separate “Wonderfully Weird World” show as well?
I created a folder for this in my Testing library with 8 seasons. Season 7 is matching to “The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball”.. I’m using TMDB ordering.
I doubt you can match it as a separate show since now TMDB or TVDB aren’t treating it as a separate show.
You can actually even just move “The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball” under “The Amazing World of Gumball” without renaming it to Season 07 and it will be picked up correctly.
Anyhow, back to plex I went with using the season 7 naming off the main show for the new episodes and plex pulls these in without any problem. I also suspect using tmdb episode ordering for The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball would work as doing a match off its id tmdb-291904 works. So, using tmdb episode ordering for both these listings should work, depending on how you want to name your media files.
TVDB however only list the episodes as s07 so if your using that then that’s all you get.
Aha, I believe the issue is because I am using TVDB (DVD) ordering. Most likely because the source I got my files from was a DVD rip, and it was simpler to organize my files that way. I doubt there is a DVD for Season 7, then any files in “Season 7” are unmatched in my library.
So few of my shows use anything other than the default episode ordering, that I had failed to check what ordering I was using, and assumed I was still on my default of TVDB.
Thanks for letting me know it works in normal TMDB/TVDB settings, which clued me in to the true culprit.
Most certainly As you say, this new season / show (depending on how you think of it) has not been released on dvd so its not part of the DVD episode order at tvdb. You can see here its marked as removed which is why its coming up blank for you in plex.
I moved my s07 episodes today to the new The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball listing and its picked up okay when using tmdb episode ordering, so no problem there.
with no imdb or tvdb ids. I added the imdb ones last at tmdb but need to review the tmdb bible to see if its okay to add the tvdb ones. Think its okay but want to be sure as they are technically belonging to another show listing.
However as you suspected, looking at the show level we have problems …
… with plex having tvdb going to a dead link. A fix match still works off this tvdb id (as it will fall back to others on the list strictly for matching) but I’ve no idea how good the metadata is going to be if your using tvdb ordering. I’d personally just recommend staying clear of it …
You mentioning staying away from TVDB ordering has given me an idea. Wouldn’t it be cool if Plex automatically set the show to use the default (TMDB (Aired) or TVDB (Aired)) sort method based on the automatic matching tag {TVDB-464881} in the file name? I have a few shows that I must use TMDB sort order for due to the two-episodes-in-one, and I leave a note in the folder name to remind myself of that fact if I ever have to rejigger my library in the future (or move to Jellyfin, if Plex goes under).
If Plex automatically determined and set the order, I could remove those tags and just rely on the match ID. Because as it is, I can use the TMDB id to set this show, but I will then have to set it manually to use TMDB ordering after it is added.
Edit: Interestingly, the episodes area all unmatched as expected under TVDB. When I edited the show to change it to TMDB, I discovered the ONLY options were “Library Default” (currently set to TVDB) and “TMDB (Aired)”. Is this new behavior? Where if a show does not have a TVDB ordering, it isn’t even an OPTION to select it in the UI?
Yeap, this would be expected if your matched off The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball as there is no tvdb listing for this show. Remember, as I mentioned above tvdb://464881 is listed within plex (they need to clean that up) but it is removed from tvdb which is why there is only a tmdb episode option.
If you really want to use tvdb episode ordering then you can attempt to match off the main show tvdb-248482 naming your files s07 aired order. However, these episodes may or may or not unmatch in the coming days once plex catches up to the removal of the episodes from tmdb. Its hard to know for sure so we’ll need to wait and see.
Oh, sure sure. I just had never encountered Plex simply removing one of the episode ordering if it wasn’t available. This may be the first show I’ve seen that isn’t actually in one or the other of the two sites, so seeing the UI simply remove one of the options was just a bit of a surprise.
