H265 Slow To Buffer During Direct Play While H264 Direct Play Is Fine

Not sure why but when I attempt to remote stream any movie or show I have in H265 format from my Synology NAS, it takes a long time for it to buffer. When looking at information regarding the stream, it shows that the video is direct playing but uploading from the server at <1Mbps (I have a max 30Mbps upstream connection) which means I usually have to wait several minutes for it to buffer before I can begin watching anything without it needing to buffer again.

However, when I play a video in H264 format, it will also direct play, but will buffer at around 15-20Mbps and I don’t have to wait any time to let it buffer properly.

Thoughts anyone? As stated, this only appears to happen when remote streaming and isn’t a problem when playing something on my local network.

Often when you see such low speeds it is due to the file being badly muxed (with the audio and video located in distant parts of the file). You could experiment by remuxing one of the problematic files and see if it works better: See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201097958-remuxing-files-to-mkv/
