Sorry, I did miss that. Looking now.
Thanks, sounds good.
Yes it does. Hope this will fix at last.
Any news?
Thank you for your efforts
New beta release ( 1.26.2.5797) and no news yet about transcoding in SHIELD.
@anon18523487 is this still the latest update you have on this issue? From 4 months ago?
@anon18523487 Can we please get an update on this? No information after such a long time makes me question whether itās being worked on.
It is still being worked on. I hope to have some news soon.
Thanks.
To recap - My 4K HDR TrueHD clips do not play on my 1080P TV anymore with PMS 1.25.x., either on my Shield or a Roku TV / Roku 3 e.g.
1080P TrueHD clips do play.
At home this is not an issue since the large majority of my TVs are UHD (4K) sets (for all our main viewing areas).
Away from home is where the transcoding working will be critical so i can view UHD TrueHD clips on non-4K setsā¦
Hopefully this will indeed be fixed soon.
See my latest comment in Shield tv don't hw transcode - #38 by MovieFan.Plex.
IT LIVES (works)!
Details: Current Nvidia Shield Experience 9, PMS 1.27 running on the Shield, tested with iPadOS and web clients with explicitly-set quality settings to force transcoding. Transcoder settings: Disabled HDR tone mapping (per linked comment), checked āUse hardware acceleration when availableā and āUse hardware-accelerated video encodingā. These are the same settings/circumstances that would previously fail to transcode and throw the errors in the Plex console.
Thank you, @anon18523487!
Thanks, but still not working for me, unless both the TV and streaming device (if any) support 4K (HDR):
The playback issue persists when I test either a 1080P clip with TrueHD audio or an UHD (2160) HDR video clip with TrueHD audio on an old Roku 3 (which does not support 4K). This happens with the Roku 3 when paired with my new 4K HDR Atmos Dolby Vision TV.
(Note - This is one of my mostly new TVs which all support 4K HDR and /or DV. It has Google TV and works fine for the same clip on Plex that way, BUT to see if the issue is resolved, I ran the clip on an old Roku 3.
I wanted to simulate a scenario where I am away from home and play the clip on a 1080P TV and /or an older 1080P streamer).
UGH - PMS stopped running after this BETA update. I tried restarting the Shield numerous times. In the end I found PMS was no longer installed (got uninstalled after I ran the Beta update today).
So I downloaded PMS from the Play Store, but now it wants to recreate everything from scratch! Sigh.
Anyway to avoid this???
What is the actual issue?
In the end I found PMS was no longer installed (got uninstalled after I ran the Beta update today).
Huh? I donāt see how the app got uninstalled on itās own.
If you uninstall PMS, it removes the server configuration so you will have to start over. If you move the Plex appdata to an external drive, you could back that up and restore it after you uninstall and reinstall.

The issue is video playback never starts (stuck on 33%) on non-4K devices (i.e. HW transcoding is in play). This is despite transcoding Health showing 4.5 on Roku 3 (do not recall if that was for the 1080P or 2160 clip) which is well above the ā1ā noted as a point of reference.

Regarding it getting uninstalled on its own, I was shocked too when I could not see it. Been using Plex for over 2 years and updated PMS a number of times (even several Beta versions before this latest one) and this has never happened before.
I have a backup of the Plex data folders, but itās from several months ago⦠Not sure if that will cause issues if I try to restore thatā¦
Luckily, a year ago or so, I had taken screenshots of literally all my Web App sections settings and also of my Shield PMS app settingsā¦
I may just go through the PMS setup steps again and then just point it to my Video and Music foldersā¦
By the way, I had my PMS set up with Internal (User Accessible) Storage.
Will I be able to select that again this time OR will it default to External storage?
I am asking because one of the 1st prompts during setup (which I back tracked on before actually moving forward with the re-install) requests the following āallow access to EXTERNAL storageā (caps added by me for emphasis only).
Can you get me the log from the Roku for that attempt?
@anon18523487 - I sent you the Roku 3 Plex logs as requested for this 2160 TrueHD clip.
@njweb I think your issue has to due with tone mapping not working right now. Since the Roku 3 does not support 4k or HDR, PMS needs to transcode to 1080p SDR. Right now, tone mapping isnāt working. If you turn off that option, you will get a 1080p 10-bit video, but the Roku 3 doesnāt support that either. Right now you are stuck when using that Roku 3 until we can get tone mapping working.
Hi,
I have been reporting that everytime I install a new version of PMS on external SSD since Android 11 update my server disappears, others have reported the same, I have been able previously to uninstall start a new server, stop the server and restore a previous version (not all previous versions will restore??? ) then rebuild the metadata - this is extremely tedious.
Last night I updated to the new 1,27 beta you promoted, same thing, I found a version that would restore and rebuilt the metadata but as soon as I exited the Plex player app on the shield the PMS has disappeared again.
I will now need to uninstall, start a new server and see if I can restore - this is painful, really is and I have been reporting it since February and Iām not the only one, I seem to think it is people with external ssd it happens to most.
I think you werenāt patient enough, I have files on external drive, took a while for the server to reappear after rebuilding meta, but I waited and didnāt have any issues thereafter
I was patient, you didnāt read correctly, the files did rebuild the meta and the files where accessible, but as soon as I exited the Plex player app the server disappeared.
