I’m trying to setup the new free Live TV on my nvidia shield pro. I downloaded the newest version of Plex from google play and verified I have the 1.18.9 media server. The instructions say go to settings and click on “Live TV”, when I go to settings there is no “Live TV” does this new free offer work on Android TV or the Nvidia shield? Has Anyone had any luck setting it up. I have a Homerun tuner that works on my Shield with the homerun app so I know it’s connected and working.
Live TV and DVR are working on the Nvidea SHIELD like on other servers with an available tuner.
Did you access the Plex Media Server Settings through the Android TV app or through a browser (app.plex.tv/desktop)? Setup through the browser should work just fine:
I tried to set it up with the plex app from the google store. There are no options to set up live tv under settings in that app.
I started another thread about trying to get live TV working on my Nvidea Shield TV Pro. I get to this screen through the browser, but it doesn’t say introducing live tv and dvr. It just says Unable to load DVRs:
- What version of Plex Media Server have you installed on your SHIELD?
- Do you have a tv tuner connected to it?
Where is that screen, when I open the web site from the open a web app link it looks nothing like that, my shield is not listed on the left side.
1.18.9 media server version, and a HD Homerun tuner. The tuner is working on the shield with the HD Homerun App.
- Option 1: enter http://app.plex.tv/desktop or https://app.plex.tv/desktop into the address bar of your browser
- Option 2: use http://[local IP address of your SHIELD]:32400/web instead (optionally with
httpsinstead if you have configured Plex to require a secure connection)
PS: you had already stated you’re on the newest version and have a tuner – that question was directed at johninor
I have Version 1.18.0.1913. I have a Tablo that I was hoping could connect over the network, but from the phrasing of your question, I’m thinking now that it will not work.
Well that linked helped some, I seem to be making some progress now using the http://[local IP address of your SHIELD]:32400/web link.
You need to update your server to version 1.18.9 or newer!
There’s a list of Plex and community supported tunes:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/
From what I can see, Tablo is not in that list.
You might however want to look into the article describing community supported tuners:

I got it all set up on the http://[local IP address of your SHIELD]:32400/web link and everthing went great, scanned channels and browsed the guide. Now how do I watch Live TV on the Sheild? I opened the app on the Shield and there is no guide, and no way to watch live TV.
I suspect the guide could be hidden behind the More > menu in the navigation (until you pin it).
I checked again this morning and it had appeared over night. Seems like it takes a while before it comes up. It wasn’t hidden behind the more menu, I checked. It’s working now, I’m watching TV!
For this release, you need to use the local version of the Web app that comes with the server, and not the one hosted on app.plex.tv to set it up
I downloaded the Plex app thru google play on my Shield. There is no way to setup a TV tuner with that app. (note: I already had the app when y’all announced the free live tv offer and I didn’t uninstall and reinstall the app to see if there is a wizard that asks to setup the tuner upon installation). The only way to setup the tuner is to login to the Shield Plex server externally with a browser and setup the tuner. Nowhere in the instructions is the web address of the Shield Plex server mentioned to login and setup the tuner.
You cannot do that in the client app… the setup is available in Plex Web (see above in this very thread how to access the related settings and trigger a setup):
