Has plex given up on monitoring folders for new movies?

Well, I like my FireTVs, and I have them, and I am also very aware that using them for Plex is an exercise in frustration.

My FireTVs are in use when Plex isn’t needed - and my Rokus are in use when Plex is needed.

The ‘work-around’ has been very clear for many years, but… as long as Plex continues to offer a Plex app that doesn’t work for FireTV - I’m gonna keep complaining about it.

This IS the way.

I’d agree normally, but at least in my experience the problems with fire devices (at least the older ones especially) were very not specific to plex.

In fact, my initial usage for fire tv was kodi, which was an exercise in frustration that eventually lead me to plex, which was not much better.

Tldr; crap hardware gets crap performance/usability.

Amen.

The ‘Crap’ part of FireTV ONLY shows up when I fire up the Plex app. For ALL other things I use FireTV for (Amazon/NHK World/Sky News/Other) it’s great. I love it. Always have. X-Ray is great - but I’m not foolish enough to think, or ask, for it to come to Plex 'cause the only one getting any radiation from X-Rays will be me.

I’m sufficiently radiated now, thanks…lol

Why is the moderator asking me to pick one or two of the choices (the answer is both issues are a problem, although the issue #1 of plex not recognizing new media is now intermittent, not ongoing) and then allowing this to turn into a conversation about fire tv devices are crap, so buy a better device or too bad? give me a break, the fire cube works just fine. it along with any other device on the market is going to have problems with some things and excel in others. technology has been this way since creation, get used to what you have and make best by learning to use it. so the “windows gets a virus, buy a mac” answer (which is the dumbest thing also) doesn’t cut it. The problem on plex not picking up new media when the server has recognized it IS a problem, and i don’t particularly see how that is a hardware limitation when it is an app designed to run on it, not the other way around. Oh, and interesting use of the word “bollocks” LOL, are you aware of what it means? Now i suppose the british meaning may sorta make sense as nonsense, but calling them “balls” is quite weird.

One doesn’t have to look far on the forums to see that the Plex team is largely abandoned Fire/Android devices.

I was just re-organizing my home screen @JuiceWSA and I am not sure if this was always there or added (I don’t recall seeing it) but next to the library to the left is the three dots for re-organizing. Well now when I go there, under “unpin from sidebar” is “scan library files” which says "request an update for the content of “Your Library Name Here” (in my case Flix New Releases). Seems to fit the bill for the cube not catching items that are added on the server. I swear this was not there before.

Yep, haven’t seen that before, but there it is.
Does it work?
(I don’t want to mess up my Roku Session with FireTV Beta Test - I’ll do it later… maybe)

If it works - I’ll take it.

I was in mid-library overhaul, so it appears to have worked fine BUT it was a bad time to test since it was picking up another 1100+ movies into a new library, but i did add a new one even though it wasn’t finished (i know, dumb) and it appeared on the cube just not without the poster. Either way, it sure seems to do what has been missing. And no, I would say it is mission critical to go find out right this second. Now if only a magic tick box to remove media that has been viewed from recently added movies/tv , all would be a-ok in the organization world of my firecube.

To address that other nonsense @Voth24 [Amazon’s ] Fire TV platform now has over 40 million users, the company announced today. That’s up from the 34 million it claimed in May 2019 and more than the 32.3 million active accounts Roku reported during its Q3 2019 results this past November. So yeah, prolly not something the Plex team wants to just go and abandon. Full article here https://sg.news.yahoo.com/amazons-fire-tv-platform-now-140838628.html

If Plex isn’t going to fix, let alone acknowledge, a two year-old bug that completely breaks some common file types on Fire devices, then I consider that “abandoned.” The same issue is also popping up on a lot of Android phones.

You would think the Plex team wouldn’t want to abandon those numbers you cited, and yet, here we are.

More writings on the wall of abandonment of the whole local media portion of plex as a whole as far as the server goes. Relates to my reply to a post about them adding other paid subscription channels the other day. As I said there, reasons why I have NOT paid for plex pass. Their inability to fix things that the userbase requests.

I don’t mind them committing time and resources to ad-backed media, paid subscription channels, etc. I’m of the opinion that more options is always better. However, the problem arises when basic compatibility issues are ignored for years at a time, making Plex unusable.

going back to the original post and problem, this thread is mis-titled.

the problem is not that monitoring folders for new movies (that is the SERVER).

the problem is some/all of the fire tv and/or android clients are not properly refreshing the hubs.

this has also happened on the nvidia shield, but has since been fairly consistently updating for me.

what some of you are not grasping, is that amazon designs their hardware, and their STREAMING MEDIA very specifically for each other.

amazon does not care to create hardware to make plex’s purposes easier, or to make your life easier, only for their own profit.

since I am the OP, no, you are talking about the second problem that BECAME the main issue @TeknoJunky . The problem WAS that the server monitoring for new data in folders was not detecting ANYTHING. That problem became intermittent for myself, and since no one else seems to have that problem, and everyone who uses firetv in some form do have the problem of it not “refreshing” new media that the server has detected, that BECAME the problem.

What you think you are explaining to the group that is supposedly not grasping is so blatantly obvious, I have no idea why you are quoting me. Plex needs Amazon, Amazon sure as ■■■■ does not need Plex, therefore it is up to Plex to work with Amazon, and if that task is impossible, don’t even release a media player to do it. Plain and simple. Microsoft isn’t going to cater Windows versions around a new game that comes out, that game developer caters to Microsoft. If anyone doesn’t understand this nature of things, that is not my fault but you surely aren’t explaining anything new to anyone, nor are you even spot on what this discussion was about.

So plex went from ignoring movies being added, to adding them twice. Can we stop working on streaming movies no one wants and jamming ads for those into the client, and maybe fix existing problems? Newly added movies are showing up as duplicates? Just started happening

yeah, the people here who also have seen it, and on the other post, the obvious proof it was happening, and nothing was done about it. chime in with something useful next time, or move along

I’m having this issue on my server as well. Only started a few days ago, I’m assuming the last server update. Surprised to not see others with the problem reporting it though?

I’m having this exact issue. I just installed PLEX on a brand new computer build. I did not backup/restore my library, instead I decided to rebuild it from scratch. Days after adding all my media and creating all my libraries in bulk I started adding individual movies and TV shows yet the “Recently added ***” sections DO NOT update. Its driving me crazy, not sure if its the PLEX software or something else, which would be weird on a freshly built system. And NO ONE is talking about this on the forums, so I don’t know what to think. :unamused:

They are added just fine to the library, they just don’t appear in the “RECENTLY ADDED MOVIES” or “RECENTLY ADDED TV” sections in the Home screen. I checked all the library settings for each movie or TV library we have. Include in dashboard and on-deck are selected, so yeah I just don’t understand. Could it be some sort of corrupted library? even if its a fresh PLEX installation?

If you added your media during the course of creating the library, then Plex will use their file date as the ‘Added at’ date.
Now if this file date is in the future (for whatever reason), then you won’t see any movement in the ‘Recently Added’ hub.

To confirm this theory, please post the contents of the Plex XML info of the media item that is on top of the ‘Recently added’ hub.
