Hauppage Xbox One Tuner on Windows 10 Can't Find Channels

I learned recently that the Hauppauge Xbox One USB Tuner (US) is now supported by Plex DVR. As I already own this, I was thrilled! BUT, after attempting to use it, no joy. Here’s where I’m at:

  1. Connected tuner to Win 10 PC running Plex Media Server
  2. Windows searched for, found, installed driver automatically
  3. PMS couldn’t see tuner
  4. Installed driver from Hauppauge website, rebooted
  5. PMS sees tuner
  6. PMS can’t find any channels
  7. Moved antenna coax from USB tuner to built-in TV tuner
  8. TV sees all local channels, shows full strength signal on all (Mohu Leaf 50 w. amp)
  9. Moved antenna coax back to USB. Scan again, no channels. Reboot, try again, no channels.

NOTE: I have NOT installed the WinTV 8 software from Hauppage on my Win 10 machine, because Plex install guidelines specifically cautioned that this causes conflicts. The tuner was working fine on my Xbox One before I switched it to the PC. I’m thinking about installing it to see if I can see the channels at all or if it’s something about the USB tuner not playing nice with my PC, but I don’t want to cause additional issues by doing so.

Is your Win10 box virtualized? Can you provide logs?

Also, ensure WIN10 isn’t using the device itself. Checkout this thread: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/274173/xb1-tuner-wintv-hvr-955q-cant-find-channels#latest .

Thanks. Sorry I didn’t find that thread on my own; guess my forum search skills aren’t quite up to snuff (I did search). I checked Windows 10’s recording devices, and sure enough the Hauppage was set as the default. I plugged in an Xbox headset with a 3.5mm jack and set it as default, tried to scan again, but still no channels.

I went back to the recording device list and disabled it, having noted that Windows was still showing audio levels on the device even though it wasn’t set as default, but the scan failed again. Figure this may have been because disabling it prevents Plex from using it. Re-enabled with it not as default, and Windows now just shows it as “Ready” without actively showing the fluctuating levels that indicate it’s currently watching the incoming signal.

For good measure, I’ve also closed every non-essential background service, so all I have running now is PMS, qBittorrent, Sickbeard, SabNZBD, Chrome, and Radeon settings module (NOT any of the extra capture software, just the driver and basic control panel).

So that worked! I’m a bit concerned that restarting the server will bring the issue back, depending upon whether one of my usual background apps will try to grab it again. I got over-eager and started a recording of something right away, so can’t restart just now. But now that I know it was either one of those applications or the disable/re-enable trick in recording devices, I’m sure I can use process of elimination to find the culprit and determine a solution if the problem returns. To hedge my bets, I’ve gone ahead and installed WinPatrol to delay startup of the most likely culprits, in my case EventGhost, Steam, Belvedere, and Dropbox. I actually don’t think any of my background apps are probable as the cause; I think it was the Windows thing, but doing this will only help me in having the system boot faster and PMS to load more quickly.

So again, thank you so much for your help in getting this issue resolved. If I find anything new that may help others, I’ll come back here with an update.

Cool!!! Glad to help

This seems to be a growing issue with MANY Windows users. I hope PLEX Support adds this to there documentation at some point.

@BlaineKyle ,please be sure to make this as answered so it can help others in the future. Thanks!

I too have this issue. As a note I am using windows server 2017. I have tried installing the bda drivers. Eventually I decided to try the wintv 8 software and it couldn’t see the tuner!!

I have the exact same issue. Running on Server 2012r2 xbox one adapter not seeing any channels when scanning. I have installed the drivers from hauppage and PMS sees the capture card, just doesn’t find any channels. I have checked my audio settings and not being used. No other apps running.

I just installed same drivers and PMS on a laptop with Win 7 Pro and it’s working correctly. Must be a compatibility issues with 2012R2

I’m running Srvr16std. What I noticed was that if I ran the scan from the server, it failed every single time. But if I run it from my Mac, it finds channels. Makes zero sense. So I’m running it from my workstation right now and so far it’s found 30 channels.
