Hauppauge WinTV-DualHD doesn't work with channels with teletext (Italy, Sweden)

Hello there,

I noticed that I can perfectly watch the main Italian channels (RAI and Mediaset sets) with the latest Hauppauge WinTV 8 software and I can’t watch or record the same channels in Plex DVR: the channels don’t work at all or they show random teletext pages on top of the image (see the video below).

I tried to delete the DVR in Plex and do a fresh configuration multiple times, I also scanned the channels multiple times.

Do you have any suggestion to find out what’s happening and try to solve this issue?

This is my current set up:

  1. an Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD with updated drivers that should be supported
  2. a strong antenna that serves the entire building (it works great with the WinTV 8 software and other TV sets)
  3. Windows 10 (clean and updated)
  4. the latest version of Plex server for Windows
  5. I live in Milan, Italy

This is a short video that shows how the same channels work in WinTV and Plex:

Tried uninstalling WinTV8? - The supported tuners page mentions it conflicts at the bottom of the page.

Windows: “WinTV 8” (for WinTV tuners) or “AVerMedia TVBox” (for AVerMedia tuners) software might conflict with Plex Media Server’s use of the tuner. If you have issues tuning channels, please remove this software, install only the driver for your tuner, then attempt to scan channels again.

Just something to try.

Thank you for your suggestion, I started to troubleshoot without WinTV8 and I had the same problem.

hiya giacomo - I have the exact same problem, with teletext.
I running Ubuntu not Windows - but the thing we do have in common is;

  1. We live in countries that still broad cast teletext (Italy / Sweden)
  2. We both have a Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD (with updated drivers that should be supported).

Hmm… it would seem the Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD or Plex is the culprit.

My other Hauppage card (PCI-E) on the same machine works fine with TVHeadend, which at least would lead meto suspect Plex (PMS)…

I have issues with this specific tuner too.

Yes I guess it is a Plex problem, the very same card works great with other software.

Does anyone know if there is any way to tweak the channels frequencies/settings in Plex?

Hi Erik, you are right! I run into this problem only with channels that cast teletext!

Is there any Plex programmer that can address this problem? The Hauppauge WinTV-DualHD USB card doesn’t work with channels that cast teletext.

Just a little clarification, in case someone from plex reads this and actually tries to solve it…
On my Android TV device (Nvidia Shield) and on my Android device (Samsung Smart Phone) it wouldn’t even start the streams I get this error message : “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex media Server and this app”. Needless to say, I have tried that with no better result.

On my web browser, I can actually start the stream, but get the error described in this thread.

Can somebody please have a look at this?

The supported usb card Hauppauge WinTV-DualHD (and probably other devices) doesn’t work in countries that still broadcast teletext.

Hi Gaicomo, I tried this work around, so far so good. I already had TVHeadend up and running, so it was rather easy for me to get it working;

@kinoCharlino @bigwheel (calling out both your names because you have announcement posts in this section of the forums.)
If what erik.p linked to is true, I think it would be a great addition for Plex to detect this and adjust automatically. (I’ve no knowledge of if Plex server determines location well, or if it could read the stream and know the data isn’t CC text)

Thanks, the last server update solved this issue!
