HDHomerun - Could not tune channel

No issues here with Version 1.18.0.1944 on Windows 8.1 and HDHomeRun Extend. Live TV and DVR working fine locally and remotely – using Apple TV, macOS, and iOS devices.

Not sure if the Plex team monitors this forum, but my HDHomeRun is this one:

HDHomeRun DUAL 10143A9A
Version 20170930

And again, the HDHomeRun software on Windows 10 tunes my channels just fine. Only Plex is having trouble.

I wrote to Silicon Dust to see if they could offer any help. Here’s what they had to say:
“As far as we know, legacy devices should work with Plex. You may want to try disabling your firewall to see if that helps, as legacy devices use a different method of streaming than newer ones do, and the older method is more likely to be blocked by a firewall, while the newer method usually isn’t.”

I asked for clarification, but do any of y’all know… where and how do i modify my firewall settings? Is that done on my home’s internet router? Guessing I don’t want to disable it entirely - any thoughts on which port(s) specifically i need to allow/lessen the restrictions on? Sorry, firewall rookie here… thanks!

This still seems to be an issue in current versions. I just tried upgrading to plexmediaserver_1.18.2.2058-e67a4e892_amd64.deb to see if the tuning had been fixed and it’s still showing the same behavior. Had to roll back again.

@gregrobinsonhd, my assumption is that they’re talking about local firewall on the machine you’re running Plex on. Have you tried rolling back to a previous known working version?

Been having the same issue since getting my HDHomeRun two weeks ago. Upgraded to Plex 1.18.4.2171 (running on MacOS) this morning with no luck. As others mentioned, the HDHR iOS app streams just fine.

Pretty frustrating since this is the primary reason I bought a lifetime Plex Pass.

I have the same issue with Plex running on a Synology server.
Plex 1.18.4.2171-ac2afe5f8 can’t tune channels on my HDHomeRun DUAL HDHR-EU firmware 20170930.
I only bought a lifetime Plex Pass for recording and viewing TV as a substitute for Windows Media Center. I’m so disappointed

I’m running in to this problem and keep hoping it will be fixed by newer 1.18.x versions only to be disappointed each time. I reverted back to 1.18.0.1944 and things are working again.

Is there any bug report or similar that we can track to see when this gets fixed? How do we know when it should be safe to upgrade?

This sounds similar to a problem that I’ve been experiencing in the last three days. It had been working without problem for six months.

I’m running:

  • HDHomeRun Quatro on a wired LAN
  • Plex Media Server installed on Synology DS918+, Plex version 1.18.8.2527
  • live TV tuned to the HD Home Run using a TV guide from icetv.com.au
  • I’ve paid for Plex Pass

When I try to watch live TV using the Plex web client I get a message:

“Playback Error
Could not tune channel (No activity)”

This applies to every channel that I’ve tried. It applies to every web client I’ve tried on different PCs.

  • I can watch media files from the plex server without a problem. It’s only live tv.
  • I can watch TV on the native client for HDHomeRun without a problem

Any thoughts on where I can look for specific information? Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

Some channels could have something to do with the FCC repack. https://antennaweb.org/repack

When ever I get issues like this restarting the server seems to solve the issue. Also, updating the server as well. My server software runs a bit dated due to the fact I forget to update it. Ive also noticed issues with Roku products and Plex. My parents complain a lot that Live TV doesnt work, but when I try on my phone and Fire stick it works fine. So it coud also be the client. If able you might want to install the Plex app on your phone to double check. Another thing I noticed is about 2/3rds of the time Plex Live TV wont work within a web browser on my computer.

Best thing I could suggest is make sure your server software is up to date. Make sure all your clients are running upto date software as well. Like I said, check on multiple devices, phones, tablets, etc. See if the issue persists on just one device or multiple.

@donut417 thanks for the response.

I’ve restarted the server a few times. I reinstalled that version of the software (which is current as of today)

I installed an older version of the software to see if that would help

Interestingly I’ve noticed that Plex still records TV but the audio/video are out of sync.It means it can still pick up the channel but the code for watching the stream and the code for recording the stream behave differently

Which HDHR is this? Use http://my.hdhomerun.com/ to see if it needs an update and/or rescan the channels.

Need a set of Debug (not Verbose) logs from Server >Settings>Troubleshooting download and then drag and drop in a reply.

This! Thank you Tiebierius. Ran the update this morning and it fixed the Live TV on Plex immediately. No need to reload the DVR or rescan.

OP following up 5 months later. I have periodically tried upgrading from plexmediaserver_1.16.6.1592 (the last version that works) with the same results. I’ve tried:

  • Rescanning from my HDHomeRun Quadro
  • Rescanning from the DVR setup in Plex
  • Deleting and recreating the DVR in Plex
  • Refreshing my guide data
  • Upgrading my HDHomeRun (currently on Firmware Version 20200225)

I really wish the devs would address this issue. I haven’t been able to properly upgrade since November '19, and it’s getting tiresome.

Just pointing out that this thread is already marked solved.

Might be time to upgrade and provide a full set of logs. Considering it is Proxmox, it would be a best effort on support.

I don’t know who marked it solved. I certainly didn’t.

Why would it be best effort because of proxmox? That’s crazy.

I agree with the following:

Added to that, it’s probably best to create a new thread and be sure to tag it with the OS (e.g. server-linux) that has PMS installed. The issue isn’t with “fire-tv” so don’t use that tag. This will increase the visibility of your particular issue. Additionally, provide as much information about your PMS install/environment as possible in your new thread. I see a number of posts that add bits of information here and there…

Also be very clear about which Plex client is seeing the issue and include its version number.

Last but not least, here are the instructions for getting and posting PMS logs. Please make sure that debug is ON and verbose is OFF.

Okay, i’ll start a new thread for the same problem that has existed for months and begin the process anew… I’m not going to hold my breath, but i guess i don’t have any other options.

For the record, i had it tagged with server-linux originally and it was removed by moderator ChuckPA. If the client is a firestick, and you want me to be clear about which Plex client is seeing the issue, why should i not tag it with fire-tv?

Maybe I misunderstood this from your first post:
